failure to extract

i have this problem (minor) with my 10/22 noted after i change may barrel to "bull" one. during a normal firing sequence it extracts normally but after firing ,for example when i extract the ammo manually, it wont extract. it remains in the chamber. do i need to replace my extractor? the stock extractor seems fine, no chip or anything. rifle is clean also. just fired a total of 500 rounds since i got it.

thanks for any input :D

Your aftermarket target barrels have a Bentz chamber in them, which is tighter then the factory sporter chamber. Most of these barrels will have a warning right on the barrel which should tell you "May not extract unfired rounds" or something to that effect. So it is perfectly normal, putting in a good extractor will sometimes solve the problem.
Go with a VQ extractor and you will not be dissapointed.

:yeahthat:
Have you tried and different brands or types of ammo? Target or match grade ammo can sometimes "fix" the problem. Because of closer tolerances held by higher grade ammo. Bullet diameter can very more on non target ammo.

The other problem you may have is the length of the chamber throat. Controlled by the depth of the reaming operation. A shallow depth is supposed to help accuracy. Some of the good 10/22 gun smiths and barrel makers such as Shilen, Clark, and CPC to name a few will ream the chamber depth slightly deeper so that a quality standard round such as CCI Mini Mag will just barely drop in without bullet to land engagement.
thank you for all the replies. maybe ill consider getting a VQ extractor if it can't be solved with different ammo. thanks again :)
Chief Says :
TRY cleaning / polishing the chamber - add a drop of oil. should fix.
VQ extractor = good investment.
like the power custom extractor :t keep :snipersmi
This isn't a malfunction, it's a design feature. It's not the chamber that is keeping the round seated, it's the fact that the bullet is seating in the throat (the transition from chamber to rifling), and is actually wedged into the beginning of the rifling. On a match-grade chamber, this is normal. Finding the right ammunition might help.

cloyd,

I don't worry about the condition. Like the others have said it clearly says it won't extract sometimes. On my barrels the extractor will extract the spent cartridge about 98% of the time. Just keep the chamber clean and continue to shoot. Your delime might clear itself up later on as your barrel breaks--in nmore.

This is a situation fire-lapping your barrel might actually improve. Since there will be considerable buffing/polishing of the throat, it might help to keep bullets from being lodged too tightly into the throat... just a thought.
what you can also try is, find a ball bearing sized to where it will fit in the slot where the extractor spring slides into. put the bearing in and then put the extractor spring and plunger. this will act to compress the extractor spring more and it'll keep the extractor pinching tighter on the case lip.

i had the same problem with my VQ barrel, i used a VQ extractor and it never helped till i did this little modification.
