I'm looking at a Bushnell Scopechief 6x20x40 at Natchez. Right now it would go on a Marlin .22 for 50yd shooting, but in the future I'll prob. put it on either a CZ or Ruger in .17HMR for 100yd shooting. Is 20x enough magnification to shoot reasonably at 100yds, or do I need to step up to something w/ a bit more magnification?

Yep,
For casual target shooting 20X should be fine. But for serious shooting I'd go with at least 24 to 36X or higher if you can afford it. JL

JL gives you sound advise. If you going to use it for serious target work (benchrest shooting) then a higher power scope would be better, but for anything less than that a 6X20 is fine.
