Ejector with slight bend?

1983 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Spitdog
I just received a 10/22 carbine from a relative that hardly ever shot the gun. It was bought in the late 60’s. Today I was cleaning it up and noticed the extractor has a slight bend in it, just past where it sits in the designated slot. It didn’t look normal to me, my gut tells me this piece needs to be completely straight. Can someone confirm. Thanks

Correction: the part is the ejector that is bent.

You are correct, the extractor should be straight. Check the timing to be sure the slot aligns properly. You could just remove the claw to straighten and polish it but if it is an older gun I would just get an aftermarket replacement and spring. The aftermarket ones are always sharper and harder than the factory and improve extraction and ejection. You can pick one up off Amazon for $8-$10 and installation is very easy.

Thanks, yea I already had it apart and will replace it like you said. I was little bewildered on how it got bent it the first place, since I was told not even a box of shells were shot.
Actually, if you look in the Stickies, you will find information on extractor tuning which includes bending the tip.
The headspace on 10-22 bolts can vary quite a bit, causing extraction issues, and the early fix was to bend the tip so there was less free play between the case rim and the claw.
The better fix developed later was machining the face of the bolt face to correct excess headspace, and installing a better aftermarket extractor.
I have twelve 10-22's of various build-up's, all have Que machined bolts with VQ extractors, and all extract flawlessly.
I even have a few extra Que'd bolts tucked away for future use.

Yes, I saw that on the bend and also there's a video. I just can't see that being preformed on this gun due to I know the history. I suspect this gun had a jam and it was forced. I just pulled it out and straighten it,then polished both flat sides on a stone. I looked on amazon and there's none, but flea bay has a stainless one I will probably get. Looking at some of the vendors on this site, most don't sell them.I suspect most people don't have a problem with them.
Volquartsen is the go to extractor here on RFC, just plain great.

Kidd sells them too, both premium quality vendors.

I looked on both of those sites and didn't see one. The ejector is what I need. The only place I found them was eBay.

I don't need an extractor, that's not what was bent. I think I termed it wrong in my first post. It's that part that fits in the little slot.

Sorry for the confusion, my fault.

By the way, as long as the magazine is in the gun, it acts as the ejector The one in the trigger housing is to guarantee ejection in the case the mag is removed with a round still in the chamber.

Ah, ok I didn't know that. I did read that with the ejector removed it still shoots fine. And that explains it. Thanks for the link, I bet I looked on ten different vendors sites and none had them.

By the way, my carbine was produced in 1966 according to its serial number of 25k, it sat in a closet the whole time.I even have the other half of the box of shells that were not shot. Peters 22 LR.
I thought you were talking about the ejector.

Yep, That's the part! I just straighten and polished it and stuck it back in.

Good job!
Just in case you ever need one, Ruger's own.

Thanks, That didn't even cross my mind to look there. And I have bought parts from them before for some of my other Rugers. LOL. I think I was getting caught up in the after market quality parts.

I think the only trigger parts I'm going to buy is either a Kidd or Vo, Firing pin and extractor. That should bring this gun up to speed.
