Disabled shooter

Howdy y'all! I suffer from diabetic neuropathy. For those that don't know, that means I have very little feeling in my feet and lower legs. Maintaining my balance is pretty much impossible. If I close my eyes, I fall down. Would you think that if I shot seated, but offhand, would that be acceptable?

If propping your elbow on your hip is okay, maybe propping my elbow on my knee is okay? I

Thanks folks. I'm now fully disabled and about to hit the big nasty 60 in a week or so! More free time on my hands now.

At the end of the day you want to be safe and you want to enjoy the sport and ideally excel. I would imagine that you would do well shooting prone, it's a very stable platform and the long range shooting pads are well padded...you might consider this option

I think that would be fine. I suspect the match director would make the call at an event. If you are shooting a sanctioned event, there may be published rules on how to handle this.

I agree, but I thought that would be an unfair advantage. I would like to keep it on as fair a footing as possible. I figured seated on a stool would be as close to the same disadvantage as standing offhand as I could get. I don't want an unfair advantage just because I'm disabled.
i copied and pasted this directly from the NRA rule book on silhouette shooting.
i can't imagine that safe and appropriate accommodations for a disabled competitor would be considered an "unfair advantage".

I commend you for not only participating but also doing the right thing.

13. PHYSICALLY DISABLED SHOOTERS
13.1 Physically Disabled Shooters - A shooter who because of a physical disability cannot fire from one or more of the prescribed shooting positions outlined in these Rules, or who must use special equipment when firing, is privileged to petition the NRA Protest Committee for permission to assume a special position or to use modified equipment, or both. The petition will be accompanied by pictures of the shooter in the position for which approval is desired and, if special equipment is required, the pic- tures will show how this equipment is used. The petition and all pictures must be furnished in exact duplicate. The petition must be accompanied by a medical doctor’s statement if the physical disability is not completely evident in the pictures submitted.
  1. (a) Each petition will be reviewed by the NRA Protest Committee. The Committee may require additional or supplementary statements, medical information or pictures. If approved, the NRA Secretary will issue a special authorization certificate to the individual con- cerned. Such certificates will have necessary pictures attached.
  2. (b) Shooters who have received special authorization certificates are required to present them when requested by officials of the competition.
  3. (c) In the event of a protest involving the position or the equipment used by such a shooter, the Jury will compare the questioned position or equipment with the certificate and photographs presented by the shooter. If the shooter’s position or equipment does not in the opin- ion of the officials, conform to that authorized by the NRA Secretary (or if the shooter has no authorized certificate or pictures), the protest shall be allowed and the shooter will be required to change immediately to the position or equipment which has been approved or to an otherwise legal position or equipment.
  4. (d) Should a protest be carried beyond the Jury, the original protest will be endorsed by the Jury Chairman to show the action the Jury has taken and will be forwarded to the National Rifle Association.
  5. (e) National Records and Grand Slams may not be established by use of scores fired in special positions or with special equipment as may be authorized according to this Rule.
  6. (f) Two types of authorizations are issued: temporary and permanent. Permanent authorizations are issued to competitors who are perma- nently disabled.

Thank you sir. I've always been a competitor at heart and an award is hollow if won by an unfair advantage.

August 2020, I was in the hospital for 10 days, 3 in critical care. Total kidney failure. I now just endure dialysis 3 days a week. 4 years ago I rode 450 miles on a bicycle in a week in Kansas on a tour and now can barely walk 100 yards. It's a little disappointing to say the least!

thanks y'all!

I'm sure any local club match director would allow just about anything (within reason) if it means having another shooter on the line. If you want to go to a bigger match (regional, state, nationals, etc.) then you'll probably have to get an official variance as described above.

Keep it up!

Good luck with whatever you do, but keep shooting and trying to compete!

We have had a couple disable shooters at our club that shot High Power and Service Rifle. Match director let them shoot from a bench without a rest.

I too have the neuropathy from diabetes and Multiple Myeloma(cancer) not as bad as you though and mainly in left shoulder and hand. I can't hold a rifle steady enough to shoot off hand so I just go watch and help the match director out by calling the relay he is in.

In out club we have 3-4 handicapped shooters in wheelchairs or walkers, we welcome them to shoot any way they can, we don't award prizes or anything anyway. Glad to have them with us.

Off a stool shouldn't be an issue if you aren't resting your arm on your knee.

We have had shooters in a wheelchair and a shooter who had lean against the bench to stand. These positions are perfectly acceptable. WH

Hey come shoot! Good on you for supporting the shooting sports! As above variances are allowed for, and typically present no obstacles! Thanks!
We have a competitor at PGC who shoots silhouette from the seated position. He shoots from a chair, resting his arm on his side, as one would in the standing position, not resting on his knee or leg. I dont think you'll have any problem with a match director if you want to shoot from a chair. Good luck and keep on shooting.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate everyone. The closest range that hosts this format is about 45 miles away, and it'll be about a year before I'm back in a vehicle, but I'll be looking to ride with someone and get my feet wet!

I'm thinking a stool and resting on my hip like everyone else is my preferred method. And maybe a venture into benchrest might also be in my future!
