When shooting my gun today i rested the stock about 3" from the magazine and was hitting spent .22 cases at 25yrd no problem. The i moved the run where it was resting about 1" from the end of the stock and my point of impact changed to were i was shooting high. Is this normal and what is the cause?

Different Rest Position = Different POI

OnTarget,

Yes, it is quite common....! ! :(

That is why you see a "stop" on the more expensive rests...! ! ;)

Each time you change ANYTHING, you risk changing the POI...! !

Benchrest shooters can get very anal about this....! !

The cause is "changed harmonics" of the barrel / receiver / stock 'system', which causes the muzzle to be at a different point when the bullet exits...! ! :(

Common observations:
0 Upward pressure on stock / barrel = shot goes high.
0 Left pressure on stock / barrel = shot goes right.
0 Right pressure on stock / barrel = shot goes left.

Be consistant....! ! ! ! :D

Big Mike is correct again as usual. I support my rifles only within the bedded portion of the barrell. Most of mine are equiped with the bughole tuners and if supported outside the bedded area strange things can happen.
