Hello to all,

I'm thinking about putting together another rifle using a used Ruger rifle and while purusing the rack I noticed that a few of the used rifles were marked that they take the "early magazines". OK early magazines. Has/Is their more than one version of the 10/22 magazine that appears to look the same as the ones I currently have?

You're in CA, so I guess you're not allowed to buy any of the new hi cap magazines that resurfaced when that stupid, gun band expired.

Just a guess I don't know the laws in CA. I just know the're strict.

Your correct on that issue! All were allowed are 10 round magazines of any brand. It just has to be 10 rounds only. I'm refering to the standard Ruger magazines. Are they're more than one factory original generation wise? When/If I decide to start my new rebuild I don't want to buy a used carbine that take an old magazine that's outta date or not available.

yea, as bigdaddy mentioned re; the slot vs hex headed screws, they are all the same.

Many thanks for your postings. I'm currently thinking of building another 10-22 rifle from the used gun rack in my local gun shop. That's whay I saw the tag as marked "early magazines" and had wondered if they did indeed make more than one version of the same rifle. Now that I know all I have to do is pick the best one regardless of the tag. They want about $175- Is that a pretty fair price?

Depends on the condition... Some people will pay more for one that has an early mag and that lacks the warning on the barrel (pre-warning).

I'd pay a little more for an anodized receiver myself. That's your call. The new 10/22s are painted pretty sloppy.

All I can say is that the used rifle rack is the used rifle rack so regardless of the receiver are anodized or painted I'll have to look at them more carefully. I do believe they're anodized like in the past. I HAD NO IDEA THEY NOW PAINT THE RECEIVERS!!!! I GUESS EVERYONE'S CUTTING BACK.

All I need FOR my build-up is a good working rifle that's mechanically sound. I'm gonna disgard the barrel for a new one and get a new synthetic stock. This project I wanna try one of those "muzzle weighted barrels" that use the factory stock either in blue or stainless steel just for variety sake. Wether they give better groups than my old Midway barrel is up for debate but I'll have to make one to find out. Has anyone had any experience with these barrels?

I bought a pair at Turners right before xmas for $150 each new.... I don't know where in Socal you are, but they're a chain in riverside/orange and SB counties... That is the cheapest I've ever seen them- they usually go on sale at turners or big 5 for about $180.... so you really won't save much at all buying that antique.

Yes, they've been painting them for some time now. Lately you can see the paint runs and overspray. My Ruger Race Rifle has a few runs on the top by the mount screws.

I understand what you're saying... but if you have a choice, definitely get the anodized. The easiest way to tell is by looking at the logo on the side... is it very crisp? Can you see the striation marks on the sides of the receiver? (looks like a uniform grain, like wire brushed)...

Just by the nature of anodizing, those receivers would be stronger. They also look much nicer.

Tomorrow my I'm gonna take a little time and compare the two for sure. IF the anodized receiver are stronger that the new versions them that's probably the way I'll go since the barrels gonna go on my shelve anyway. For me as long as the receiver, bolt and trigger group are sound then I can go to the next step. Later-on I'll get the new barrel when things get better. Farther's Day is coming up and my credit cards going up soon.
