OK, so I decide to do the bolt release mod on my 10/22.
I take it apart and remove the release. All very orderly and nothing goes sprong!
I put it back together and notice there isn't any spring action to the mag release.

I take it apart to see what isn't hooked up and don't see anything that would give the mag release a spring action.

I look up a trigger group parts break down and see there is a large spring around the mag catch.

I don't know how it could have gotten away from me but I can't find it anywhere. It's not the kind if a spring that would shoot away like the springs in an AR.

Anyway, this trigger group is new to me. Came from a Charger and I have shot it in my 10/22 a few times and didn't notice anything wrong with it.,

If the spring was missing before I took it apart, I would have noticed it correct?

Anyway, I guess it's time to find a spring.

I hate when this happens!

The spring that works the bolt release is the spring that fits in the right side of the hammer. One leg hooks into the notch in the tab of the bolt release the top leg goes under the pin that holds the bolt release in place. You might check and make sure the bottom leg (which has a kink in it) did not miss the notch in the tab.

Actually the missing spring is a coil spring about 1/2" in diameter and goes aroung the mag catch plunger.

I verified that if the spring was missing the magazine wouldn't stay in place.
Looks like I screwed up and lost the spring..Hate to admit that!

The internal springs for 10/22's are cheap from ShopRuger (http://www.shopruger.com), so it might not be a bad idea to order two or three of each kind from them so you'll always have spares on hand.

If ordering from Ruger or our on line gunsmith, get a firing pin, the little springy down under the FP and the spring on top of the bolt. Will be less than 10 bucks for all inc shipping. Then you will be ready for any break down, pretty much. Might even want a spare mag spring .

Add in a mat for your workbench, and a $3 magnetic tray from Harbor Freight (or wait for the coupon that makes them free, I have three of them ) to keep the parts in during disassembly.

no, he didn't... i thought that too, but when i went back to the original post i saw he mentioned the bolt release mod and went straight to the mag release spring issue.

the guy is clearly trying to trip us up... and it worked (on you and me, anyway).

If I suspect a spring fling is possible, I'll disassemble/assemble the part inside a clear plastic gallon baggie. Can't say how many times this has saved me from grief.

While the OP is waiting for a new ordered part, he may be able to get a functional spring from the local hardware store.

that's a pretty big spring to go AWOL...look around some more using a bright flashlight and you should be able to find it

Ya but a occasional launch of a spring helps with the urge to clean around the bench area... it's the only time I do it. :bthumb:
