From 100 yards away it almost looks like this ram is down - but it's not.

CardPuncher, what is the curtain behind the targets?
I'm not answering for CardPuncher.... I don't know why that club set out a curtain, but I do know why I laid out fabric behind chickens the last 3 years I ran matches back in the day. To help keep the matches moving the fabric I used cut down the time it took to find AND recover the little ones.

I got twenty bucks says his club had the same reason. OH WAIT.... I forgot that twenty bucks is no longer worth spit. ;)
That Ram has some serious balance skills, he should be in the circus, if there still was a circus.

My guess is that’s an attempt to reduce chance of ricochet, since from the picture the backdrop look like rock.

I think the fabric is Sunbrella. It's there to make a better background for the targets. Without the fabric you're looking at a mix of bare dirt bank, trees and brush and the targets don't stand out well.

Sorry Litl_Red but that was a good guess. The chickens on our range are at ground level with a backstop of sheet steel. It's about 2 feet high and angled forward at 45 degrees. The chickens can't go far but you have to get down on your hands and knees to get them, or use one of those big magnets on a handle, which we have available.

LOL,hangers make me mumble bad words!
replies to this thread have been spread out over months, but yes it can be mighty frustrating to have a good hit not count. We shot s 60rnd rifle cartridge match this morning and the person I was spotting for made a great hit on the first ram with a 30-30 170gr cast, and it moved the rear leg almost off, but not enough.

How thick is that Ram?, And what size? I assume it's not full size or you'd need a crane to set targets.
Yes, full scale for CLA, BPCR and HP. The rams weigh between 60 and 80lbs... depending on who you ask, or perhaps depending on who makes the target.
I have turned every animal at least once. I just figure, if I had hit it solid, it would have gone! I have seen one solidly hit ram which just stood there. I don't know what the cause was, perhaps water on the base which created a vacuum lock. That was the only well-hit smallbore target I ever saw stay up. The fellow who made that shot was philosophical about it. he said the whole match was going badly for him and he couldn't be surprised. WH
