Cleaning the Crown

The groups on the 7-4 had opened up a bit and I was going nuts trying to figure out why. My mechanics were good, same lot of ammo, decent light, cleaned and re-fouled barrel, no wind and relatively large groups. Aaaaaaaaargggghhhh; what could it be?!

By dumb luck I was running a training exerciser and the muzzle was up as the rifle sat on the rack and I looked and thought the crown was silver, not black. Duh. I had been so focused on other things I forgot to clean the crown for the past too many shots. The carbon fouling was awful and it took a bit of doing to get it clean.

I had always heard the crown could effect accuracy but never had it set in until today.

After a good cleaning the groups were the usual size. Note to self; be sure to clean the crown when you do the rest of the rifle.

How Many Rounds Fired

AOM,

Q:How many rounds per Week/Month are you firing related to competition?
A:For most competitions, 50 rounds easily covers the zero period and the race.
If things work out between life schedule and races I can attend 6 races each month during July and August.
In June and July maybe 4 races each month.
Winter might be 20 races total depending on how much driving/flying I can afford.

Last year I attended 51 races between summer and winter
and these included club events, NorAm Cup, Nationals and the Pemi/HSC training series.

At the most it was 2500 rounds at comps.
During the races it was probably half that.

Q: How many rounds per Week/Month are you firing for practice?
A:250-400/week average. I'm on schedule to go though 15,000.

Q:How many rounds per Week/Month are you firing for recreation?
A: It's all for recreation. I rarely go plink.
Each trip to the range has a defined purpose.

Occasionally I'll set up a few clay pigeons
or something to shoot but this maybe counts for 50 rounds per year.

When I attend silo matches or straight-up target matches
it is essentially another form of training to break up the biathlon specific work.

These events are probably 500 rounds per year.

Q:How frequently do you clean your rifle.
A: I pull a bore snake every brick or two and use a brush on occasion.
I keep the action free of residue and clean the crown every 500 round or so.
The Fiocchi ammo I use shoots super clean.

The bullet lube is teflon so there is no waxy buildup
or gunk on the breach and firing pin.

Even after 1000 rounds the uncleaned rifle still punches 1/2" holes at 50 meters.

Approximately, how may rounds have you fired this season?

Approximately, how many total rounds has your current rifle fired?

Has your rifle(s) encountered any malfunctions or mechanical failures?

What type of field maintenance or repairs has your rifle(s) received?

Has your rifle received any factory maintenance or repairs.

Maintenance & Repairs

AOM:

Approximately, how may rounds have you fired this season?

8,500 based on what I have left

Approximately, how many total rounds has your current rifle fired?

12,000

Has your rifle(s) encountered any malfunctions or mechanical failures?

Only 1 misfire and this resulted from using waxy lubed ammo in the cold.
The lube gunked up the pin.
I flicked out the chunk of crap and hand loaded a spare round and kept shooting.

What type of field maintenance or repairs has your rifle(s) received?

No repairs and the only maintenance is cleaning and oiling.

Has your rifle received any factory maintenance or repairs?

No

Simulated Rounds

Kevin6q,

How many times per Week/Month/Season have you dry fired your rifle?
Awww ... what I meant...

How many simulated rounds do you snap-off
during a dry firing session?

What I'm trying to guage,
how much wear and tear your rifle is being subjected to per season.
