Cleaned 597 magazines

490 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  wmrimfire,22
Hello to all,

OK I just cleaned out my new 597 metal magazines and am going back to the range to try them out. My only experience was that I had to use a pair of pliers adjusted to it's iwdest position to squeeze the magazine to get the base off. OK that parts was done and all 4 of them now cleaned. I also tweaked the spring a little by pulling it apart to give it a more heavier spring action. Currently happy camper:)

My next question is to all, How often does everyone clean their 597 magazines?

Many thanks,

Really not all that often. Maybe once every 3-4 range trips (~500-600 rounds for me). Usually just pull all the plastic parts out, hit the metal with some Gun Scrubber, reassemble, and call it done. Never had any problems with my gen3 mags, prob could wait longer between cleanings, but why quit what works? YMMV.

JT,

Thanks for your imput. Now I have a base-line to start with now that my mags are cleaned and ready. My biggest concern is that a few of my metal versions won't engage the bolt stop after my last rounds fired. In addition one of them also has a tight follower that hangs-up inside causing the round NOT to spring-up into place for the next shot. I know that this is partly due to weak magazine springs so I tried Tsubaki's advice and pulled it apart a little to give it more spring. If it does hang again I'll shave some plastic from the follower to make it more loose inside and try that. I'll give everyone a report on Monday when I get back to work.

If that follower does not drop freely into the magazine, then a light shaving/sanding/polishing of the follower is in order anyways.

The top of the mag getting the dirtiest doesn't help much either.

Junk to the max

Tsubaki,

I did noticed that a few of my new magazines got slightly stuck after cleaning them. When I tried them in my first 597 they locked the bolt stop back as I pulled out the springs a little to give it more tension. However when loaded fully they once again started to fail to lock the stop again for some reason. During the firing phase they had a tendency to work and sometime not. For what reason I can't say but I can say for these metal ones they worked lousey!!!!! In mean JUNK to the max!!! For now I'll keep them as I know they work in my newly acquired 597 in stock form. The next time I clean the mags I'll sand down the follower guides a little to keep them from sticking at the top. Any other suggestions you can make I'd be willing to entertain.

I believe sticky has a description of the "good magazines". there were three types, inital nyon-works for me,second metal-don't work for me, newest type with dimensional differences-haven't tried but from what is said here, remington finally got it right with spring and dimension changes. The point is,get the latest version. PW

dtoggs,

Yeah! My sticky are the new metal ones. My original plastic/Nylon works much better than these new generation versions which I believe there are 2 generations of these. Personally Remington should chew-out the company that produces these "metal" ones cuz I paid good money for these and they're JUNK. For now I'll use them as long as I keep them clean and will slowly tweak them again for reliability like Tsubaki had suggested. Next are the followers to make them NOT to stick when they're at the top. In addition I still feel they need to work on the bolt stop spring also. Crude device that seems to work for me sometimes. Frustrating to say the least I'd rather disable it and work witout it as long as the firing pin doesn't get damaged.

I was talking to Remington the other day, about the Gen. 1 & 2 mags., and the rep said they knew of nothing that could be done to these mags. to make them reliable. He said they were just a poor design.

jrobb,

WOW! That's very commenable of Remington to admit to a faulty design BUT now the problem is thatthey won't do anything about? No exchange program?
Bummer. Enron again.

He said he would send me a new mag. when the shipment came in(they were currently out of stock). He said if it worked ok, then I could ship the other ones I have back to Remington and they would replace them free of charge.

jrobb,

Thanks for your posting. I too might go that route when they're shipnment comes-in. Heck! These mags are expensive and they admit they're design is crummy? No letter to replace free? Kinda odd since they offer 20 bucks back coupon if one buys one of they're rifles. Man who running Remington anyway? Is Remington running Remington or is it someone else? Man something sounds funny here.
