Not well versed on this equipment. Any ideas? Would be useful I think but not benchrest shooter in the formal vernacular. Would be using it for rimfire but also testing center fire ammo. Don't need anything to complicated with phone apps or anything like that. Was thinking self contained unit that will do the job, just ignorant as to where to start. Thanks..

I ordered this one from amazon along with a lead sled..I could never get comfortable or hold position with the gun resting on sand bags ..they never were at the right adjustment and many fliers because of it..or hey that was my excuse...now I wonder if they make ballistic panels for the front of the chrono..( thats a joke) but it wouldnt be a bad idea...one of the reviews for the chrono stated he shot the chrono so he didnt take any stars away for early failure..

Common knowledge perhaps, but whatever you get, two words of advice I wish I'd know sooner;
#1. test fire at a paper target first to be sure your bullets will be going into the "safe zone" over the sensors, and,
#2. If, like with my old Chrono, the sun shades are supported by metal or rigid rods, replace them with wooden dowels. That way, if you hit one, the vibrations won't jeopardize the delicate components in the main unit.

Before you jump into purchasing a chronograph you need to consider a few things.

The first thing is are you reloading? If you are then a chronograph can give you some useful information but few people know how to analyze it. They also get caught up in the numbers and forget about the target.

Second, If you are shooting rimfire then you'll get data but for what use? You can't do anything about the data and the target will tell you everything you need to know.

I would highly recommend you read the series on statistics on the Precision Rifle Blog. Here is the link to the first article in the series.
