Does anyone have a picture of rifles fitted with 16", 18" and 20" .920 diameter barrels to compare looks? I'm going to buy a new GM barrel but want to see what each length barrel looks like on a gun.

Thanks for any replies.

The 16" looks like a stubby. good for field use.

The 18" is similar to the factory carbine and Deluxe Sporter.

The 20" is same as the factory Target.

I am buying a 20". Just looks nicer, more balanced.

Facotry carbine is 18 and 1/2" not 16" I had a 16.5" ss flute and it did look very stubby. I got myself a 20" ss flute now or will soon (stupid ups). It all depends on your use, the look you want, and really, the type of stock you have. Some stocks have shorter forearms, allowing for a shorter bbl. to look more proportiante (sp?).

It has been said that the optimum lengh of a .22 barrel is about 16". All the propellant has been burnt/expanded in that length. So the bullet loses some velocity in the last 4" of barrel.
It is also said that accuracy does not suffer due to the shorter length...
All I know for sure is a short barrel is louder and they sure look funny in a B&C Anschutz stock...FWINW JL

Mark White, in his book...

The Ultimate Ruger 10/22, tested many different ammos and barrel lengths. The results were that maximum muzzle velocity was almost universally obtained at approx. 16 inches. However, that said, to properly stabilize a specific bullet at a specific range for top accuracy (since bullet weight, length and shape may vary), a 16" barrel may not necessarily be the optimum length.

That's why it's important to try a lot of different ammos in your rimfires to find the those that cycle properly (in a semi-auto), and that are the most accurate at the distance you intend to shoot. Due to muzzle velocity and flight characteristics, the bullet that gives you the best accuracy at 25 or 50 yards, may not give you the best accuracy at 75 or 100 yds.

If you're shooting iron sights, a whole new dimension is added, since a longer sight radius tends to give you greater potential accuracy.

Last year I took an Anschutz 1413 and chopped the 28 inch barrel down to 18 inches, put it in a McMillan stock, and used it as a standard silhouette rifle. I later added a bloop tube for extra muzzle weight. Here are the results at 50 yards:
Practice ammo - Wolf MT (several lots over time)
28 inch barrel average group size, 10 mm (34 five shot groups).
18 inch barrel average group size, 9 mm (21 five shot groups).
18 inch barrel w/6 inch bloop tube, 8 mm (18 five shot groups).
Match ammo - Lapua Midas
28 inch barrel, 6 mm at 50 yds.
18 inch barrel, 9 mm.
18 inch barrel with bloop tube, 5 mm.

At 100 yards the wolf group decreased from 33 mm to 24mm; and the Midas remained the same (with bloop tube).

Actually, I like the balance so well that I sometimes put on a 10 inch bloop tube and shoot it in smallbore matches with the 1413 stock. For those interested, the weight of the 18 inch barrel, 6 inch bloop tube, McMillan stock, Signature zee rings, B&L 6-24 scope is right at 10 lbs. Later dude.

Fjold,

If you go to the galleries and take a look you'll find lots of didffent combos to check out. Here is a link to mine, its a 18" SS GM barrel.

In the pic its on a factory carbine stock and cheap scope mounts. It now resides in a Bell & Carlson thumbhole Anshultz stock and PC mount with burris signature Zee rings. I like the way it looks in the B&C stock myself, haven't got a pic of it yet but will post one when I do.

I bought the 16" barrel for my 10/22. I don't have any pictures yet. I don't know that it matters, but in comparisson to the others you will see on here, mine looks like a '72 Camaro parked next to an '03 Vette.
That aside, I got the short barrel because i am putting a silencer on this particular rifle (screw on can type) and I did not want something as long as a broom handle when I got through with it. If I were not planning on using the suppressor, I would go with the 20" barrel. Mine shoots awesome with the 16, but it looks a bit odd.
Good Luck.
