A friend of a friend of a friend is selling a used VQ Lightweight THM barrel and I'm helping my cousin spruce up his 10/22 on a short budget.

What should I be looking for as signs of damage? (ie: improper cleaning via rod damage, etc.)

If it was only cleaned with a brush once or twice, it might be very difficult to see.

If you have a borescope, you can use it. You'll probably see lots and lots of tiny little scratches if a bronze brush has been used. They may even appear as large scratches.

Look at the crown. if it is damaged or has burrs, it needs to be repaired.

After you clean it out look through it. Make sure there's enough light on the other end
Check for what looks like rings. If you see a ring it could be damage from firing the gun with an obstruction in the bore.
