Apologies if this question's been asked before. I'm looking to purchase a new (reasonably priced) front rest. At the moment I'm keen on the Caldwell Rock BR - which I understand may have a few limitations in actual competition.

I've noticed a difference between the following two listings:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S5W78A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

http://www.opticsplanet.com/caldwell-rock-br-competition-front-shooting-rest-440907.html

The tops are of different colours and dimensions. Is there a significant difference between the two versions or is it really just cosmetic? Was one an updated model?

Any help would be appreciated.

Note that the Optics Planet ad says the cradle differs from the image, I think the current version is the Amazon listing....that's what I have.

The Rock BR is a good rest, certainly enough for casual shooting off a bench. If you were competing you probably want something more, but mine works excellently and I'm happy with it.

And then, there's the ever popular Rock BR modification thread... link

Edit to note that I have not modified my BR as it performs to my requirements, at least so far. It's just nice to know what can be done if you ever do want to fine-tune it.

Definitely look at the link timberbeast provided. For the money, it is worth it. Get the latest version of the rest.

The base is just fine. The top leaves a bit to be desired for getting the best you can get out of your rifle. I kept the base and had a Greenlaw top manufactured that now sits on the BR base.

I have the Rock BR and use it in competition. It's not fancy, but it gets the job done for me......:bthumb:

Someday I will probably upgrade to a nicer rest.....if for no other reason than for the convenience it offers.

If you shoot formal competition, you will see rests there that folks spent a lot of money on. But the Rock BR is good enough that you can't really use it as an excuse for not doing well.....after you familiarize yourself with it.

You can upgrade in the future should you feel you need something more.
