With all the war coverage I've been watching lately I have probably heard them term 'burst fire' a thousand times.

I've been wondering what sort of mechanism is used to control burst fire. I have a general idea of how full auto works in most guns, but I have never seen anything describing what sort of device is used to 'count' 3 rounds, letting loose 3 in full auto then stopping.

Nothing too specific like "ya take yer AR and drill a hole right here"....just a general description like "somethin turns a wheel with 3 notches in it and the wheel shuts off the other thing and counts the rounds" sort of thing.

Tri-burst is a option for the M16. you can set an M16 up 3 ways:

Safe/Semi/Full
Safe/Semi/3 shot burst
Safe/Semi/Burst/Full

Heck you can even do just safe and semi, but why.

The difference is in the parts, requires a different sear, and and spring the "Counts". I myself dont like tri-burst. If you dont happen to fire the 3 rounds, it doesn't always reset itself so next trigger pull could be one shot.

It is not difficult to get a quick trigger pull and let off 2 to 4 rounds while on Full Auto. This is probably the best because if some reason then you have to Hose something down, your alreay on the proper setting.

Burst fire is also, more controlled, allows ammo to last longer. After the first couple rounds, full auto fire out of a M16 is more for coverage because your bouncing all over the place.
