I am in the market for a scope at $100 or less. I was thinking about getting a BSA for my .17HMR. What are your opinions on these scopes?

BSA Scopes

Terry1,

"BSA" used to have several very good scopes; then, they moved all their operations to China......! ! :(

I can not recommend any "BSA" scope today.....! ! :(

You might want to look at the "Simmons" 44 Mag scopes; they have several models that would suit your needs, and they are very popular with RFC'rs.....! ! :)
I have a BSA 6x24x50 catseye that will not hold a zero. Optics are not that good and the adjustable objective is about a 1/4 inch of of the settings. I bought mine based on my brotherinlaws Japanese made Platinum. I got 2 years out of it before the zero started wandering. Spend a few more bucks and get a Simmons.
Ditto on the other post...I have heard nothing but bad reports on the late BSA's from anyone who really uses their scopes.......Simmons has much better feedback from users....good luck and good shooting!!!
I have a BSA Contender Target 4-16x50mm A/O.
It has target knobs and 1/8 inch clicks.
I paid $45 used for it.
The optics are yellow in low light conditions and with lots of light I sometimes get internal glare and the picture's colors look washed out in some spots.
It takes a couple of rounds to settle the scope after adjusting the windage/elevation but after that it seems fine.
Is it good quality? nah, not really.
Was it worth the $45 I paid? Hell yeah:cool: especially when you consider the fact that the only other scopes I could afford are just as bad in optical quality but don't have the same features or magnification.
At 4x it's a little clearer than a $50 4x scope, at 9x it's slightly clearer than any $50 3-9x you'll find, at 16x...well it kinda stinks. I actually never set it at 16x because I can see more detail with it set at 12x.
My A/O markings are about half an inch off at 50 yards. Althought it's not uncommon for them to be off a little, this was off by a whole lot.
I'm gonna measure out distances and remark the A/O one day.

Well there's my opinion on my BSA.
If I had to do it again I would have saved up more money and bought a Bushnell Banner. Those are really nice when you take the price into consideration.

I HAVE A BSA 4X16X40 MIL-DOT SCOPE ON MY CZ VARMIT IN .17
HMR. MINE IS CLEAR AND BRIGHT AND HAS BEEN NO TROUBLE SO
FAR. ZERO IS CONSTANT AND THE ADJUSTMENTS ARE FINE. I DO HAVE A LOT BETTER SCOPES, BUT AT ABOUT $85.00 IT HAS BEEN A GOOD SCOPE FOR THE MONEY. THE ONLY SIMMONS SCOPE I EVER HAD WAS AN 8X32 PIECE OF JUNK THAT WAS HAZY. THE BSA
SCOPES ARE CHEAPLY MADE BUT AT LEAST MINE HAS A NICE FINISH. SOME OF THE BEST (LOW DOLLAR) SCOPES I HAVE SEEN
LATELY WERE MADE BY BUSHNELL. I HAVE OWENED SEVERAL OVER THE YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH A BUSHNELL SCOPE. I GUESS ITS A MATTER OF TASTE.....I WOULD RECOMMEND BUYING THE BEST YOU CAN AFFORD. I HAVE NOT ALWAYS DONE THIS....BUT IT IS GOOD ADVICE NONE-THE-LESS.
GOOD LUCK....I HOPE THIS HELPS .......THE IDEA IS TO BUY SOMETHING YOU WILL ENJOY.....AND NOT CURSE AT.

<<<<<< GOOD LUCK >>>>> AND GOOD SHOOTING.:)
If your budget is limited to that 100 dollar bill, I'd suggest looking real hard at Simmons' WTC18 6.5-20X50. INMHO this is still the best $100 buy out there. I have one of the older Japanese BSA Platinum 36X scopes & it is great but I doubt you will be pleased with any of the current Chinese offerings.............
