Guns that "shoot better than they should".
You know, the kind of stuff that you didn't expect much from before you shot it, but proved to be real gems.

I'm lucky enough to have a few, which I stumbled across here and there over the years.
For handguns, I'd say it's my Taurus 96. Much better than expected (or paid).
For rifles, either a FrankenRuger 10-22 or an old Marlin-made Sears bolt .22.
And to sneak in a .22 air rifle, I have an RWS springer that turned out to be much more than I bargained for.

What's yours?

I'm impressed with my Shaw barrel. At 50 yards I've shared edges. If I ever get back to Michigan and hunt squirrels with it I truly believe the ole 22 will hold it's own. Thank you everyone who suggested it.

I bought a Swiss K-31 from AIM Surplus. At the time I had a C&R license and they had apparently purchased a large supply and were selling the less-than-pristine samples for $59.95. The price included delivery to my door. I bought a clamp-on scope mount and put an old Tasco 10X on it and shot a 5 round, 100 yard group that measured less than 1/2" center to center.

Because the thing ejected straight up the scope had to be offset to the right side of the receiver, making it awkward to shoot except off the bench, and changing distances made it necessary to dial in dope on the scope for both elevation and windage. My eyes, by that time, weren't good enough to sort out the factory open sights, so I sold it to fund the purchase of a Remington 700. Nevertheless, that old ratty looking K-31 may be the most accurate rifle I've every owned.

A Norinco ATD .22, a copy of the Browning that loads in the buttstock. Bought it because of the look and was surprised how well it shot. With a cantilevered scope mount on the barrel and with a 3x9 Redfield the short barreled thing was amazing. Used it to shoot steel chicken shoots at 25 yds offhand. Had to knock them off a 4x4. Five birds per relay x ten relays. A fun way to spend an evening. Won a bunch of money with it. Still have it but I shoot other .22s now.

Not a rimfire but I picked up a Browning B78 in 22-250. I had 14 pieces of new Lapua brass laying around and some 52g Berger bullets left over from a deuce. Terrible rifle to get a supported shot with skinny forend that I have to cock the front rest side ways and half hold with my hand, what feels like a 6lb trigger with terrible creep and mush, has repeatedly shot groups in the low .2s and even some below .1, makes no sense.

Marlin 336-44 (yes .44Mag); the most accurate levergun I've ever shot. A friend (a Marlin looney BTW) had the same experience with his, which is why he had me get one. I don't have the records handy, but shot as well as nearly every sporter bolt rifle I've had.

Bought a Squires-Bingham SB20 for about $50 when a local discount joint went out of bidness in the '80s. Figgered it would make good cheap "swap fodder." But you don't swap off a gun that shoots THIS well out of the box, no matter HOW ugly it is.

Picked up a Glenfield M25 bolt action new at Dicks back in the 80s. It was a Black Friday deal. $39.00. I was going to give it to my teenage BIL for Christmas. I stripped the stock of it's brown spray coat and rubbed in a couple coats of BLO and put a $19.95 1" Tasco 4x on it. Came out real nice. My BIL blew it though. He shot at his sister with a air pistol so no way I was giving it to him. I took it to the range and found out it would keep all the shots in a dime size group at 50yds with PMC Zappers. I used it for squirrels and won a quite a few local "hunter" silhouette shoots with it until a couple guys started showing up with full blown competition rifles. Still have it. Now I'll have to dig it out. I think I also have a brick of those old Zappers too.
