Colt used to make a 3x and 4x scope with the built in mounts. I presume your AR has the standard attached carry handle?

I never liked these Colt scopes, always seemed like I was looking through a soda straw. Same problem/feeling with the cheap (<$50) Chinese copies.

I have a Simmons 1.5x-5x Whitetail Classic Compac that I use on my rifle. I love it. I think it sells for around $125-$150. Low power for quick target aquisition (think close in running coyotes) but enough power for moderate range accuracy. Plus it has a rough matte finish that looks good on an AR.

And for heaven's sake don't skimp on the scope mount. You get what you pay for. I once bought one of those $12 gunshow specials and when I got home it wouldn't tighten up in the handle. I cut 3 or 4 grooves in the bottom and sides of the base with a file, filled them in with a bead of JB Weld, added release agent inside my carry handle and screwed the base into place fairly snugly. Now it tightens up properly but probably isn't good enough for serious bench shooting. Easier to just buy a quality base to begin with.

My Ar-15 carbine wears a Bushnell Sportview 1.5 - 4.5 variable mounted on the carry handle via a "standard" mount and B-Square scope rings.

The scope is the older type, minus the large bell at the objective end. This give me a wide field of view for the duplex reticles.

Looks cool, at at about ten inches in length it doesn't overwhelm or unbalance the carbine. With the usual care to check occasionally for stuff that "shoots loose", it holds a "zero" just fine.

With the mount, the scope, and the rings (all guns show "finds", I have a little over $55 tied up in the optics. No reason it wouldn't swap over to the Ruger 10/22...

(But the "serious" Ruger wears a Tasco 6x18x42 ($59 from CDNN) with B-Square 10042 rings on a Weaver TO-9 base. The scope has target turrets and a duplex reticle, and is a lot of fun at 100 yards+.) Haven't tried THAT on the AR...yet!

Chief says : A scope mounted on a carry handle is about useless
as the carry handle itself.
The one nut lock down mount - seems like a good idea.
Good idea to throw away.
The M-16 - AR-15 was not designed to have a scope mounted on it. nothin but a carbine style assult rifle ( jungle fightin ).

Later , as people wised up = developing the flat-top version.
Doing away with the dangerous carry handle made sence.

If ya carried it as designed , the muzzle pointed forward or backward. just the opposite to what everyone was taught
" straight uo in the air , or straight toward the ground."

If you did mount a scope to the carry handle , you had your cheek
barely molded to the stock . Many required a raised cheek piece.
For what - a center rectile too far above the bore.

No ! if ya scope an AR - SCOPE the flattop model = lots better.

What's the matter Chief? You don't get a good chin-weld when using a scope on the handle? It definitely takes some getting used to, and is not CQB. The CQB optics on the carry handle ARE useful though. Ever see some Delta Force and Spec Ops M4s? Carry handle or gooseneck (off of the carry handle) mounted. Why? Because you need those irons to be available (You can flatop irons, but you are getting a little too low on the A2 stock... The CQB optics (designated for CQB... Close Quarter Battle) are designed for rapid target acquisition...

I agree though, if you can just use glass, go with a flat top... or get a removable handle. =)... Though I do have a Simmons 3-9x 40mm scope on the carry handle. Nothing some plumbers tape couldn't fix to keep the one nut in place (on the threads). and again, you want the irons as back up.

Personally , I have no use fer the trash carry handle . " chin-
cheek - nose weld" . Personally , I have no use fer the trash
sights offered either. Personally- I have no use fer the trash
M4 either. So theres nothin the matter with me.
Simmons scope on an AR = A DISASTER IN THE MAKIN.

Fails sight failures " backup iron sights " ? maybe in the
old days . Not today , buy the best - it doesnt FAIL.

example = Stoner SM-15 Match rifle , Knight Armament forearm
mount = all accessory rail . ADJ gas block , B&K RINGS.
Scopechief 4x14x50 , MRS0-4 red dot sight w/ 2 nv settings
12 brightness settings. add a tactical bolt latch ,

YOU GET = about the best setup AR money can buy.

Hey , guess what = no carry handle . bout $3000.00
small price for the best out there. RIGHT.

careless handle - BWAHHAAAAAAAA!

yes ! ya can shoot with both scopes in place . even in total
darkness with yer set of PVS-7 NV Goggles . and HIT QUARTERS
@ 100 yds.

Lefty / Weld " sounds like a shop project "

Sticker " For sale sign - written in Brail "

no actually = its a bullet drop chart , on three different
loads that I was testing for accuracy.
Tape it on the gun "stock" . Then you can quickly tell
how much more a 55 gr. will drop at 300 yds than a 52 gr.

I leave it on , just to make people ask what it is.

Conversation piece.
