Anschutz POI

Almost all .22LR rifles shoot a little high on first shot. 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Not having the same POI after the first shot is a common phenomina of smallbore rifles. Some do better than others, however. Cold and clean is possibly the worse condition. With competition rifles, this is not really a problem since there is an allowance for sighters and foulers in the course of fire. You do not go to record until the barrel is warmed up and dirty. If it is a hunting rifle, you need to determine where a cold rifle will shoot so that appropriate compensation can be factored into that first shot. FWIW, an old smallbore prone shooters once told me that if the first shot out of the barrel is not exactly where you aimed it, you need to look at the bedding.

Most of mine are heavy barreled guns and don't seem to wander much from shot to shot. But as others have said, this kinda thing can make or break a huntin' gun... IMHO, it's more of an issue with skinnier barrels.

The guns on my "most trusted" list are those huntin' firearms that I know will shoot to where they are supposed to on that all-important first shot.

They all happen to be heavy barreled weapons as well, including my Sako Finnfire with a custom Lilja bull barrel, my HB Annie 1717D, my Annie 54.18MSR, etc.

`g`day from australia,i am answering your thread so that you might understand rimfires a bit better.i/we {my partner and i } have a NEW ANSCHUTZ 2013 BR and the first shot from a dead cold or a just cleaned and cold barrel will go as far as 8"{that is eight inches } from the intended target,the 2 nd shot takes the dot.we have learn`t to fire the FIRST shot under the target frame altogether.we have shot several 250`s but as a hunting rifle, unless it was a very dumb bunny that allowed a warm-up shot within 8" and that is at 50 mts this gun would be useless for hunting,BUT, AS A BENCHREST GUN there isn`t enough money in any bank that we would part with it.

Yep i can verify that that particular Annie shoots the first shot way off.
My Sako heavy barrel also shoots 2inches high first shot but my Annie 54 1413 Super Match is fine right from shot one

Just shows to go you how much these wonderful rimfires we all love can vary from gun to gun, ammo to ammo, day to day even........

Wow 8" off on the first shot. IMO there is something wrong.
Like you said though if it shoots great other wise don't touch a thing. Bench-
rest is it's intented purpose.

ftstinyc I don't know if it will be your cure . But recently my 54 super match which was made in 1963 started shooting worse and worse and the gun always had a cold shot . So a smithy told me to get some JB bore paste and run it through the barrel on a brush 10-15 strokes and then use a patch with solvent through it 2-3- times , then patch it till it's dry . Dry out the action too and make sure you don't leave any paste in the action . Got rid of my cold shot and shrunk my groups back down . So I have pre A Winchester that wasn't shooting up to snuff either , and it made a great difference in it too . Also did my new 1416D that wasn't satisfying me and when I shot her this evening , I finnally got those 3/8' groups I was looking for , and couple 1/4" , before it seemed to be a struggle to keep them within 1/2" , but let me also say on this rifle it was new to me and getting used to the gun probally played a part in improvement too .
