Sorry guys.

How does a 16" WP compare to a 16" GM Fluted Sporter? I'm wanting a light plinking hunting rifle and am looking at these two barrels.

I really don't know much about the WP, but I do prefer a solid one piece barrel myself. I know most here that have used Wps have been happy with them. But keep in mind while yes the WP is even lighter than a carbine barrel, the 16" fluted bull barrels are just about the same weight as the carbine barrels so they can give great accuracy without adding a lot of weight. Just something to think about. The fluted sporter would be even lighter and most likely close to the WP.

If I remember right, on their website, the WP is about 16oz. I weighed my GM 16.5" blue fluted sporter on a kitchen scale and it was ~28oz.

Well if you go by this table

Green Mountain Heavy, 20" :____~ 3 pounds
Green Mountain Fluted, 20" :____~ 2 pounds 8oz.
Green Mountain Heavy, 18" :____~ 2 pounds 6 oz.
Green Mountain Heavy, 16 ½" :__~ 2 pounds 4 oz.
"WMBS" 22" Sporter*:__________~ 2 pounds 3 oz.
[also the "Wal*Mart" 'Special' 22" barrel]
"Ruger" Factory Sporter, 18 ½" :___1 pound 14 oz.
"Clark" Sporter__________________1 pound 14 oz.
"GM" & "WMBS" weights are from Ken Clark at "WMBS".

That would mean that the barrel you mention is 2 ounces lighter than factory carbine barrels. I had a fellow tell me his 16.5" fluted bull weighed in at 32ounces (2 pounds) on a postal scale. so that should give folks an idea of what kind of weight they are looking at.

Once again, the guys with WPs say they work pretty good, I just prefer a solid chunk of barrel rather than multiple pieces.

When I weighed a Ruger factory sporter on the same kitchen scale it was ~31oz. Since I don't have anything more precise to weigh these things with, it appears the 16.5" GM fluted sporter is pretty close to the 18.5" factory sporter!
