Does anyone know of a reasonably priced (sorry, I have a hard time paying centerfire $$ for a rimfire gun) .22 that is accurate and will also shoot .22 shorts. I want to use it for squirrel hunting.

Not sure that your talking about in price, but I still think the little old 10/22 is as good of a 22 that is out there. For $150+ and used one go for under $100 bucks(I found two used ones for $50 at a pawn shop and a yard sale). The only thing you have to do to make them a better weapon, is replace the extractor for around $5.00. I think they can be converted to shoot shorts also?

Brookie:

Yes, I would just like to shoot as quitely as possible. Don't want to spook the squirrels in the next county, and I think that shorts will kill a squirrel as good as a long rifle (within range of course).

When I was a young chap, I liked to shoot hot rods (VIPERS and such) but boy do they tear up the meat. Now would like to work more on my stalking etc...

It sure is hard to find a rifle even chambered for shorts these days, and I haven't bought a .22 in years, so I would like to know that the one I get is accurate (you know head shoot a squirrel at 30 yards is good enough for me!!!:D :D :D

Thanks,

My personal preference for the money would be a CZ rifle and sub-sonic long rifle ammo. The squirrels can't tell the difference in the noise. I use match ammo because it's quiet and accurate--I killed a squirrel at 78 yards a while back with Eley EPS Match ammo. He was sitting up and I had to aim over his head--but I hit him right where his chest joins his head. The CZ's are a good value and are accurate.

With my furry tail exp, all the noise in the world won't bother them. It's the movement thats gets 'em attentive. As long as you stay in one spot, and stay as still as possible, you can wack a handfull. Take a shot, make a note where it fell, then stay put, and keep wacking more. It's when you shoot just one, and run over to grab it do the others get spooked. Then ya gotta play the waiting game all over again till they get used to the stillness.

...and I usually use a 12 guage with a mod choke and 2 3/4 all purpose loads.

My .02~

if you wont a really accurate rifle that will shoot shorts get you a marlin 39 plenty of used ones out there. I like the older guns that dont have the rebounding hammer and crossbolt safety. Mine will put 15rds in a ragged hole at 50yds and is deadly on squirrels

For quiet shooting I'd go with CB longs rather than shorts. Quieter, just as effective & generally more accurate. Semi-auto guns made for .22 LR still will not function with them though. Ypu'll have to single-load them or better yet, go with a bolt gun, CZ maybe?

Personaly I'm not a fan of Marlin, but they have some rifles that shoot shorts, longs, and LR's.... the model 81TS, and 15YN models. They are cheaper than the Ruger 10/22, and they are bolt action.

If you've got the money go for a ruger, they're great.

Catfishunter,
For a rifle to be able to shoot all those rounds I would think it has to be chambered for the longrifle. Any bolt gun will work. I think the best value out there right now is the CZ Special if you want quite. The longer the barrel the quiter it will be. You don't need shorts with a 24" barrel. Standard Target ammo is quite out of a 24" barrel. The CZ scout is very loud with the short barrel. The Special is the quietest rifle I have with that 24" barrel. Very accurate rifle too! Only thing is you got to get used to carrying the longer barrel if you been used to a short barrel. It is really no big deal though. The Special comes with a 5 shot clip. The Scout comes with a dummy single shot clip. You got to pay $25 or so for a clip for the Scout.

EZ's right about the noise on the shorter barrel. In a 24" barrel they are really quiet. I forgot you were after quiet. My bad. I've never noticed that noise disturbs them nearly so much as movement. My experience has been similar to RimfireJunkie's.

Check out the pawn/gun shops in your area. I've picked up a couple of great single shots, a Rem 514 and a Marlin 101 for under 50.00 each. Both are pretty accurate and will shoot shorts long and long rifle. The Marlin is grooved for scope rings, the Remington has to be drilled and tapped for mounts. FWIW JL
