Regarding fouling shots I have long held onto that practice for my rifles, but my experience at last month’s silhouette fun match has me scratching my head a bit. I had a rifle problem on my first string that I couldn’t quickly fix so the shooter i was squaded with graciously offered to share his custom 10/22. I asked if he had enough ammo and he said just use mine. So we spent the match with me shooting ten rounds of Aquila SE SV and then he would shoot ten rounds CCI SV. At no point did going from CCI to greasy Aguila seem to affect POI. It was like his gun was set up for me and my ammo. It was my first time with a 10/22 as well. Lots of fun but i never would have believed the ammo performance, especially using “waxy” CCI & greasy Aguila.

I sold my 10/22 after getting really frustrated with its poor accuracy. My 10” Mark 2 Target easily outshot it. So my question is, what’s a reasonable level of accuracy for a 10/22 Sporter? And what’s the return on investment accuracy wise as you move up the 10/22 price chain within Ruger? Do custom parts actually help? Bench rest at 50 yards it struggled to stay inside of 2 1/2 inches. I don’t know what normal looks like.
I have a 10/22 that started out as a sporter. The biggest improvement in accuracy was a Green Mountain bull barrel. After that, I installed a Brimstone trigger and there are better ones out there (think Kidd). I can honestly shoot 10 shot groups through one ragged hole with the right ammo. Three shot groups at 50 yards almost always 1/2 inch or smaller.

If there were as many of these " I can honestly shoot 10 shot groups through one ragged hole" as posted on the internet forums actually common to be seen in real life on the range no one would be buying custom $3000+ 22lr guns such as a Vudoo or other makes when for under a $1000 you can have a 10/22 that shoots better 99% of the time! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

It depends on the definition of a ‘ragged hole’. :ROFLMAO:

I was at the club yesterday: 50 yards, Eley semi-auto benchrest outlaw, which is the best quality I am willing to shoot a couple of hundred times at a time. What a hoot! 5-8 shots real tight (usually 5), touching (not through the same hole), 10 round groups, and who put those flyers in the mix?! CCI standard velocity was more fun (fun—aggravation—that’s a fine line): three shots touching, and where those other rounds went is an inspiration for a shotgun! :ROFLMAO: And then, there was the 50 rounds of Norma Match-22. First 30 rounds, no problems: last 20 rounds, numerous failures to extract, but the rifle went on to shoot Eley and CCI without functioning issues, without chamber cleaning. Well, at least, I know which ammunition to shoot in my bolt 22LR rifles. (y)

I dunno, 5 different 10/22s, none bedded, one in a tapco, one in a Nordic, one in a Boyd’s Evolution, one in a black poly Boyd’s lookalike, one in factory. One really good factory barrel, one “q”Ed, 2 green mountains, one factory “target”. All some degree of trigger improvement, one having a timken.
They all shoot 3/4” or better at 50 yds. For me that’s fine. A couple do better than others. I Don’t think I can do much better these days.
I remember sitting out summer afternoons with a couple guys and their 8ounce trigger cz’s and they were badmouthing my 10/22 for under 1/2” groups when they could tell the day was heating up by the slight rise in POI in their single hole in the target.
But I enjoyed the degree of precision I had, and could enjoy shooting in various positions, at various objects, and hitting them. They didn’t have that flexibility.
I enjoyed my ways, they enjoyed theirs. We kidded in fun, and had fun at the range. Even bought a wwII Mauser bring-back off one of those guys, was his dad’s.
If I was chasing super accuracy, I wouldn’t choose a 10/22. But for a very good shooter, with options galore, I am hooked. Such simplicity, my first 22 semi was a Winchester 290. For a kid, that was a nightmare to strip and clean.
I dunno, maybe my eyes ain’t too bad yet. Just took top shot at the riding club pistol shoot. Nice patch for my vest. Feels good. Lol.

well normal doesn't look like 2 1/2" at 50 yards. My 1022 shoots 1" at 50 yards easily.

Pulled my Magnum Research 10-22 out of the safe the other day when I wanted to do some ammo testing on another gun. I got a 5/16 group at 50 yards with Eley Club. I did put in a BX trigger and was using a Nikon 3-9 rimfire scope. That got me wondering if I should jump down the rabbit hole. A Timney, serious glass, decent weather? This gun can group.

To answer your question, I haven't shot a bone stock 10/22 in over 10 years but, 2 1/2" groups is not unacceptable.

It's probably a good thing you sold it before going down the rabbit hole so many of us have by adding aftermarket parts to improve accuracy. When chasing accuracy with a 10/22 it's easy to get over $1000+ invested.

We all have different reasons why we are willing to invest a lot of money to accurize/customize a gun. As for me, I shoot Steel Challenge and Rimfire Challenge. So, I wanted lighter barrels, lighter chassis and lighter triggers to go faster. I have three 10/22's I built (parts assembled) for that. I have seen many 1st timers shoot a bone stock 10/22 but, usually within a few months into it they start upgrading.

I have one that is all Kidd in a KRG stock that will shoot with the bolt guns out to about 150 yards.

Since the OP asked for realistic accuracy out of a 10/22 Sporter, I’m posting the two best looking groups from sighting in an old Tasco 6-24 on a well used 80’s vintage 10/22 Sporter last weekend. This is with CMP Eley and the groups reflect the sighting process but all the groups I shot were under 2” at 105 yards off a bench/patio table.
