Boy I tell ya,I had recently purchased a 597 heavy barrel and upon just seeing it for the first time,I thought man what a nice piece and even assumed it to be a way better gun than my 64. Just returned from the range about an hour ago with both guns,and without ever intending to compare them, just thought i would make sure they were both on line,same ammo,same optics and same practicing shooter,that Savage just beat the ever luvin' grouping out of that 597.Cheap federal 40 grain solid tips at 50 yards:savage was about 3/4 to 1" grouping and the 597 was about1"to 11/2".Both guns are stock with no mods of any kind.A lot of people who check out this forum are always trying to look for the best out of the box shooters.My choice would be the savage, hands down.I have no preference in brands but I hope this helps up and coming shooters.What would be nice is if a person had a chance to try out all types.

Well since it's rimfire and you only tried one brand of ammunition I wouldn't take it the bank quite yet. I would try quite a few types and keep track of how they shoot. Also when you switch brands if you don't clean the barrel expect to shoot at least 5-10 rounds before the new bullet lube replaces what is there from the previous brand. My 597 .22 magnum shoots Winchester Supremes in a pattern instead of a group. My friend's 597 shoots under 1" with Win Supremes. You'll find rimfires will really like a certain ammunition and sometimes you find one type that shoots decent in most of your rimfires.

I guess that was a bit premature in judgement,I certainly will take the good advice and definitely try all other types of ammo,it's just that I tend to get too over excited when it comes to shooting and guns and all that other good stuff.
