I bought a 552 with the letters X M on the barrel which makes it 1965?. I can not find a serial number on the gun .It looks brand new,not a sratch on it.No sign on it that it has been fired .The sights are the blades with the small dove tail sight on the front like my older Remingtons.Where is the serial number or what year did they start putting them on.

Yes, XM = Dec of 1965. All firearms made after the gun control act of 1968 had to be serialized, yours predates that, but many early Remingtons were serialized. If it's the BDL model it should have a checkered stock, the ADL models were plain. Yours is probably an ADL as the BDL's had a rather ornate ramp front sight. Both wonderful .22's.
