A friend and I each have model 550-1 rifles that appear the same except his is dovetailed for scope mounting while mine is not. What gives? Did Rem. make some intended for scopes or has his been modified? Any feedback will be appreciated.
I did a little study on this a couple of months ago, and Bob KK is right on or very close.
I have 14 model 550 and 550-1's and the first grooved receiver model that I have was made in September 1956, the last ungrooved receiver I have was made in July of 1952, so 1955 is a good bet for the year they started.
All of my 550-1's made after September 1956 have grooved receivers, all made before July 1952 are ungrooved. Grooved receiver models usually command higher prices, but still most 550 series Remingtons are quite reasonable.
