At 50 yards this target geta a bit fuzzy for some reason...I think it has to do with the white middle surrounded by the black. If I focus on the target it is not misshapened, but once I focus on the front sight the tatget warps. At 25 yards this doesn't happen. The 100 yard shoot uses an all black bull and that is not as tough to see as this is at 50. I might buy some of these A23/5 targets with all black bull for 50 yard match.

Nov. 2021 50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot

I see this shoot as a place where we may keep track of our own shooting improvements, compare our shooting abilities with our fellow shooters, and to brag a little.

OK, lets start:
Iron Sight (Globe & Peep)
Matches start on the first day of each month and end on the last day of the month. Scores to be reported by the 2nd- 4th day of the following month. A Score Bulletin with all shooters names posted on the 4th or 5th day of the following month.
TARGETS TO BE USED IN THIS MATCH: NRA A 23/5 target. Note: This target is only for 50 yards. Five shots are fired at each bull for a total possible score of 200-20X.
Ammunition is shoot what you have.
Optical front lens are permitted but limited to 1.5X. Shooters may use tube extensions on either their front or rear sights as long as they do not contain any optical magnification and the extensions do not form one solid tube between sights; i.e., there must be a distinguishable distance between the front and rear tubes making them separate. Shooters may use any type or color of front sight insert (clear, amber, etc.) and after market eyepieces or discs on their rear sight (Merit, Hadley, Gehmann, etc.) as long as the inserts or discs do not offer any optical magnification.
From the front edge of the bench to the face of the target: 50 yards.
You may shoot on an indoor range, please note it when post your score.
The let's not:
have any rail guns, or benchrest stocks. Any rifle with a benchrest type stock or a custom action or a factory action that has been "blueprinted" will not be allowed in this class. A benchrest stock is one that has a forend with a flat bottom, more than 2.7 inches wide, and/or has the bottom of the buttstock parallel or near parallel to the bottom of the forend. Bench Rest Blocks (plates attached to the accessory rail or stock) are not permitted.
At the end of the year (early January) I will compile all of a persons scores divided by 12 (months in a year) and post a yearly score.

I've been struggling a bit with getting the sights lined up. Shooting for score is a different game from shooting for groups. Half the time I turn the knob in the wrong direction, the German markings on the sight don't help. I think I am finally getting the direction right most of the time!

I also think I have been "chasing the error" and I have changed my routine. Now I get things close enough on the sighter target, and then shoot a whole set (4x5) before I decide how to fine tune it. Even then my intuitive guess is often off. If I scan the whole target into the scoring app, then I can get the true average error for the 20 shots and that gives me better information. I just don't have time to do the scanning at the public range with their fixed times for target changes.

The app I am using gives me a lot of useful information, but when you scan a target you end up lining up all the holes manually and that takes a good amount of time, so I take my best guess at the range.

It also helps that the last few times I only shoot with the peep sights. I used to shoot a few sets with the peep sights, and then switch and put on the scope for some immediate feedback shooting. The scope work helped me with immediately seeing the result and working on trigger pull etc., but I don't think it was helping me much with getting my X count up.

Got out to the range a few more times. Yesterday looked like the last decent weather day for this month so I went for a bit in the afternoon. Just a light but pretty cold breeze from the front. Only shot 2 targets before I got too cold.

Shot a 200-15x and then a 197-7x. The 197 was going ok until the last target when I put 3 in a nice tight little group in the 9 ring, not sure what shifted there, me or the breeze.

The 200-15x is my new personal best for the 50 yard target. I did go another 0.1mm bigger with the front aperture.
