50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot November 2021

2048 Views 21 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  StephenBachiler
Shot 3 targets today, I don't see a thread for 50 yards so started this one here…

Finally shot a 200 today. Shot my first 199 a few months back, so I was hopeful for seeing a 200, but the last few months the best I could do was 198.

Changed the bipod to be further back on the stock today. I had it as far forward as it could go and I think the stock was flexing a bit.

The three targets ended up 200-11x, 199-14x, 200-11x

Here is the best one, which was the first one.

Thanks Ken.:bthumb: And nice shooting!I will try to get a target in this month but no promises.
You may want to copy and paste the rules from an older 50 yard thread. Up to you.
Not by best effort...but you take the good with the bad..

Target shot at 1pm

At 50 yards this target geta a bit fuzzy for some reason...I think it has to do with the white middle surrounded by the black. If I focus on the target it is not misshapened, but once I focus on the front sight the tatget warps. At 25 yards this doesn't happen. The 100 yard shoot uses an all black bull and that is not as tough to see as this is at 50. I might buy some of these A23/5 targets with all black bull for 50 yard match.

Nov. 2021 50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot

I see this shoot as a place where we may keep track of our own shooting improvements, compare our shooting abilities with our fellow shooters, and to brag a little.

OK, lets start:
Iron Sight (Globe & Peep)
Matches start on the first day of each month and end on the last day of the month. Scores to be reported by the 2nd- 4th day of the following month. A Score Bulletin with all shooters names posted on the 4th or 5th day of the following month.
TARGETS TO BE USED IN THIS MATCH: NRA A 23/5 target. Note: This target is only for 50 yards. Five shots are fired at each bull for a total possible score of 200-20X.
Ammunition is shoot what you have.
Optical front lens are permitted but limited to 1.5X. Shooters may use tube extensions on either their front or rear sights as long as they do not contain any optical magnification and the extensions do not form one solid tube between sights; i.e., there must be a distinguishable distance between the front and rear tubes making them separate. Shooters may use any type or color of front sight insert (clear, amber, etc.) and after market eyepieces or discs on their rear sight (Merit, Hadley, Gehmann, etc.) as long as the inserts or discs do not offer any optical magnification.
From the front edge of the bench to the face of the target: 50 yards.
You may shoot on an indoor range, please note it when post your score.
The let's not:
have any rail guns, or benchrest stocks. Any rifle with a benchrest type stock or a custom action or a factory action that has been "blueprinted" will not be allowed in this class. A benchrest stock is one that has a forend with a flat bottom, more than 2.7 inches wide, and/or has the bottom of the buttstock parallel or near parallel to the bottom of the forend. Bench Rest Blocks (plates attached to the accessory rail or stock) are not permitted.
At the end of the year (early January) I will compile all of a persons scores divided by 12 (months in a year) and post a yearly score.
I would like for everyone to report their score and equipment information as follows

Example:
Your name or screen name
Rifle, ammo, score
Equipment list (rest front/rear, any thing special about your setup)
Weather/or shot indoors
Excuses: Anything you would like us to know about your shooting day.
Would be nice if you could post a photo of your setup.

Good shooting Jack, I love that rifle. Have to catch these nice days when they come.
Thanks Ken. Its been about 8 years since I have shot these particular matches with any frequency and still knocking the rust off. I really used to shoot the 100's more but can't see that far anymore. This is my 3rd 540X and have had good luck with each one. Have to hold onto this one though as I have 4 grandchildren now and hope they take an interest.
I keep looking at your target Ken. 1 click right and you would have had a very high X count.

I've been struggling a bit with getting the sights lined up. Shooting for score is a different game from shooting for groups. Half the time I turn the knob in the wrong direction, the German markings on the sight don't help. I think I am finally getting the direction right most of the time!

I also think I have been "chasing the error" and I have changed my routine. Now I get things close enough on the sighter target, and then shoot a whole set (4x5) before I decide how to fine tune it. Even then my intuitive guess is often off. If I scan the whole target into the scoring app, then I can get the true average error for the 20 shots and that gives me better information. I just don't have time to do the scanning at the public range with their fixed times for target changes.

The app I am using gives me a lot of useful information, but when you scan a target you end up lining up all the holes manually and that takes a good amount of time, so I take my best guess at the range.

It also helps that the last few times I only shoot with the peep sights. I used to shoot a few sets with the peep sights, and then switch and put on the scope for some immediate feedback shooting. The scope work helped me with immediately seeing the result and working on trigger pull etc., but I don't think it was helping me much with getting my X count up.

Your left and or right hand can be used as a reference.

For example many American sights like the Lyman 90 and 48 sights, the Marble-Goss sights etc. follow a right hand rule.

Point your thumb in the direction you want the point of impact to go, and then turn the knob in the direction your fingers curl. It works for both windage ans elevation on many sights.

There are some American sights however that do not follow this convention for windage. For example, the Stevens sight on my 416 trainer rifle and the Kimber sight on my 182G do not. In those cases elevation follows the right hand rule but the windage is opposite so you have to use your left hand to use the rule for windage, and that's a non starter when you are using a sling.
I have the same problem sometimes as I have many different sights. American and European. You can make a little cheat sheet and tape it to your stock with some tape that wont hurt the finish and just write which direction clockwise moves your POI.
Like my BRNO sights clockwise = down and right.

Thanks Jack, I checked and that will help me to remember!

You are welcome Ken but that was Model 52's advice. Just want credit to go where deserved. I use a cheat sheet at my age anymore.:D
Ive taken to using 'Frog Tape' for my notes, and I write the info on the tape before applying to the gun; ie, CW=U/R
The Frog Tape readily peels off when needed without leaving residue like most others and has lots of other 'labeling' uses around my shop. Like on my recycled Rx containers for small parts.

Didn't catch that, thanks Model 52!
Got out to the range a few more times. Yesterday looked like the last decent weather day for this month so I went for a bit in the afternoon. Just a light but pretty cold breeze from the front. Only shot 2 targets before I got too cold.

Shot a 200-15x and then a 197-7x. The 197 was going ok until the last target when I put 3 in a nice tight little group in the 9 ring, not sure what shifted there, me or the breeze.

The 200-15x is my new personal best for the 50 yard target. I did go another 0.1mm bigger with the front aperture.

That is a very nice target Ken! You are improving with every range trip.

Thanks Jack, I feel like I made progress this year. The public range I go to is open every day in October and November, so I have been going as much as possible the last two months. After this month I might only get a day or two in until it warms up again.
Try the A23/5 (all black bull) targets. Im thinking they will serve you better than those A23/5R ones.
