Apr. 2022 50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot

I see this shoot as a place where we may keep track of our own shooting improvements, compare our shooting abilities with our fellow shooters, and to brag a little.

OK, let's start:
Iron Sight (Globe & Peep)
Matches start on the first day of each month and end on the last day of the month. Scores to be reported by the 6th day of the following month. A Score Bulletin with all shooters names posted on the 6th day of the following month.
TARGETS TO BE USED IN THIS MATCH: NRA A 23/5 target. Note: This target is only for 50 yards. Five shots are fired at each bull for a total possible score of 200-20X.

Ammunition is shoot what you have.
Optical front lens are permitted but limited to 1.5X. Shooters may use tube extensions on either their front or rear sights as long as they do not contain any optical magnification and the extensions do not form one solid tube between sights; i.e., there must be a distinguishable distance between the front and rear tubes making them separate. Shooters may use any type or color of front sight insert (clear, amber, etc.) and after market eyepieces or discs on their rear sight (Merit, Hadley, Gehmann, etc.) as long as the inserts or discs do not offer any optical magnification.

From the front edge of the bench to the face of the target: 50 yards. You may shoot on an indoor range, please note it when post your score.

The let's not:
have any rail guns, or benchrest stocks. Any rifle with a benchrest type stock or a custom action or a factory action that has been "blueprinted" will not be allowed in this class. A benchrest stock is one that has a forend with a flat bottom, more than 2.7 inches wide, and/or has the bottom of the buttstock parallel or near parallel to the bottom of the forend. Bench Rest Blocks (plates attached to the accessory rail or stock) are not permitted.

I would like for everyone to report their score and equipment information as follows
Example:
Your name or screen name, Rifle, ammo, score
Equipment list (rest front/rear, any thing special about your setup)
Weather/or shot indoors
Excuses: Anything you would like us to know about your shooting day.
Would be nice if you could post a photo of your setup.

Let me know if I scored correctly - I tried to stay conservative on the iffy ones.

Excuses: First rimfire match since 1984. Right arm rotator cuff surgery on 3/16 (surgeon told me no shooting yet, but that was handgun) - it was slow and painful setting up, placing the round in the chamber and locking the bolt - but I was always safe - so I endured. Breezy - but its always windy here. Good times! So glad to be back behind a rimfire. Glad I found you guys.

Beautiful day today with only slight breeze. Just having challenges with my old eyes and a blurry sight picture that comes along oh too soon. I want my 18 yo eyes back. Do iris diopters help?
Nice shooting fellows! I am hoping to get a target in this month.

Tell me about this "scoring app"
Hi Stephen,

The app I use is called TargetScan. It is pretty simplistic, there are other more sophisticated apps but this is the only one I have tried. I think I paid under $10 for it.

I get mainly two benefits from it. One is the history so I can check for improvement. The other benefit I find useful is the combined image of the targets. For the target we shoot here, the 20 shot combined image really gives me a better picture of what sight adjustments might be needed. Looking at 5 shot groups I feel can be deceiving, even worse when you give in to the idea of ignoring “flyers”.

It does a decent job of scanning the targets, but I end up manually adjusting the marks which takes some time. If holes overlap enough you will have to make your best guess (same as manually scoring).

Here is a report showing the individual targets that made up the combined target I posted above.

Sorry I just noticed a mistake in my reporting for 5/20 above.

the target is 200-10x, but I wrote 200-12x in the text
I'm interested. Where do you folks get your targets?
I downloaded the specs from the NRA website and made my own template in VISIO to print singles of the A-23 on the laser printer. They are dimensionally exact duplicates of the original. I have a PDF file to share if anyone wants to print their own.
Darn you guys are good!

I’ve been working with a peep for just a few weeks. My progress has been good but I have quite a ways to catch up.

Good job Bayview and for just starting out. But you posted in May instead of August. An honest oversight. Stay with us. Good bunch of guys here.
