Apr. 2022 50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot

I see this shoot as a place where we may keep track of our own shooting improvements, compare our shooting abilities with our fellow shooters, and to brag a little.

OK, let's start:
Iron Sight (Globe & Peep)
Matches start on the first day of each month and end on the last day of the month. Scores to be reported by the 6th day of the following month. A Score Bulletin with all shooters names posted on the 6th day of the following month.
TARGETS TO BE USED IN THIS MATCH: NRA A 23/5 target. Note: This target is only for 50 yards. Five shots are fired at each bull for a total possible score of 200-20X.

Ammunition is shoot what you have.
Optical front lens are permitted but limited to 1.5X. Shooters may use tube extensions on either their front or rear sights as long as they do not contain any optical magnification and the extensions do not form one solid tube between sights; i.e., there must be a distinguishable distance between the front and rear tubes making them separate. Shooters may use any type or color of front sight insert (clear, amber, etc.) and after market eyepieces or discs on their rear sight (Merit, Hadley, Gehmann, etc.) as long as the inserts or discs do not offer any optical magnification.

From the front edge of the bench to the face of the target: 50 yards. You may shoot on an indoor range, please note it when post your score.

The let's not:
have any rail guns, or benchrest stocks. Any rifle with a benchrest type stock or a custom action or a factory action that has been "blueprinted" will not be allowed in this class. A benchrest stock is one that has a forend with a flat bottom, more than 2.7 inches wide, and/or has the bottom of the buttstock parallel or near parallel to the bottom of the forend. Bench Rest Blocks (plates attached to the accessory rail or stock) are not permitted.

I would like for everyone to report their score and equipment information as follows
Example:
Your name or screen name, Rifle, ammo, score
Equipment list (rest front/rear, any thing special about your setup)
Weather/or shot indoors
Excuses: Anything you would like us to know about your shooting day.
Would be nice if you could post a photo of your setup.

Spent the first 2 weeks of May in the hospital and this is the first time I have felt like going to the range. Had not shoot anything sense middle of March.

No photos today of setup, don't have scan of target yet.

We know you meant the first two weeks of April. Glad that you are out and recovering... and most importantly, shooting again! (y)

Thanks for the correction. Sometime we all need help.

I am 75 years old with cataracts and have fun shooting iron peep sights. I can't shoot open sights, but they are two different animals. It takes a little time to figure what your eyes like.

This is a game I have played for many many years. It is a shame all of the old records got trashed. The A23/5 & A23/6 targets are available at American Target Company and National Target Company. If you go to America, ask for Dave Schooley and get the targets with the white centers. Much easier to see where the bullets are going through the spotting scope. Medium grade target ammo or better is recommended. I have some of the old, German manufactured, Wolf Match Extra for sale in the classified ads here if any interest. A scoring plug is not required. We compete against ourselves and measure progress day to day. If you can't get calm days, wind flags will help a lot. Last suggestion, use a good bi-pod instead of a front rest. It eliminates issues with cant. And takes up less space and weight in the shooting kit.

Whatever blows yer skirt up David😉. All the years I shot it I shot black targets and a Cowan front rest. Managed to shoot one perfect score with a 52B and Freeland tube sights. Enjoy you all (y)
Hey guys - hope everyone had a great Mother's Day weekend. I received the targets and pick up my ammo tomorrow - looking forward to getting to the range this week. I just wanted to clarify a couple rules....

BTW Ive participated in plenty of other matches (mainly IDPA/APC/Steel handgun and NRA 3/4 position indoor 50ft rimfire in high school) so I understand the importance of following the rules - but this will be my first 'Online Match' so Im both really grateful this exists (there are no rimfire matches at my local ranges) and at the same time its sorta odd for me - I thank you ahead of time for your patience!

I read the rules on this thread, the rules on 'If you are new here' thread which then referred me to the rules of '50YD Vintage Smallbore (with Scope)'.

1. I noticed only on the latter thread a mention of a time limit (20 Min) - is that the time limit in this match?

2. Are we allowed to wear eye blinders? or affix a blinder to our rear peep sight?

3. I saw the rule of a four target limit per rifle. Q: I hang my first target, sight in perfectly, then commit to start in on the 4 match targets. Targets one and two went great/as expected but suddenly on target three my shot group is tight but 3 inches to the left (something mechanical went wrong). Can I stop, discard that target and start over? Or did I just use up 1 of my 4 targets?

Sorry Im such a stickler - the importance of rules were beatin' into me over the years!

Thanks guys

As far as I am concerned, ignore the 20 minute time limit. There is a period of hot and a period of cold at public ranges. When the range is hot you can put the rifle on the bench and set up. When it is cold, you can post your target. By the time you get the front rest. rear bag, spotting scope etc. set up on the bench you may not have enough time to shoot all of your targets. Then you go cold, wait, then go hot and start shooting again. Doing this and worrying about a 20 minute time span is silly. Beyond that, in many cases you have wind to deal with ... and I have shot IR 50/50 where you set out many wind flags and force yourself to learn to shoot in the wind, but I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times our iron sight match has been shot by folks using wind flags. My approach anyway.
