50 Yard Iron Sight Shoot

I see this shoot as a place where we may keep track of our own shooting improvements, compare our shooting abilities with our fellow shooters, and to brag a little.

OK, let's start:
Iron Sight (Globe & Peep)
Matches start on the first day of each month and end on the last day of the month. Scores to be reported by the 6th day of the following month. A Score Bulletin with all shooters names posted on the 6th day of the following month.
TARGETS TO BE USED IN THIS MATCH: NRA A 23/5 target. Note: This target is only for 50 yards. Five shots are fired at each bull for a total possible score of 200-20X.

Ammunition is shoot what you have.
Optical front lens are permitted but limited to 1.5X. Shooters may use tube extensions on either their front or rear sights as long as they do not contain any optical magnification and the extensions do not form one solid tube between sights; i.e., there must be a distinguishable distance between the front and rear tubes making them separate. Shooters may use any type or color of front sight insert (clear, amber, etc.) and after market eyepieces or discs on their rear sight (Merit, Hadley, Gehmann, etc.) as long as the inserts or discs do not offer any optical magnification.

From the front edge of the bench to the face of the target: 50 yards. You may shoot on an indoor range, please note it when post your score.

The let's not:
have any rail guns, or benchrest stocks. Any rifle with a benchrest type stock or a custom action or a factory action that has been "blueprinted" will not be allowed in this class. A benchrest stock is one that has a forend with a flat bottom, more than 2.7 inches wide, and/or has the bottom of the buttstock parallel or near parallel to the bottom of the forend. Bench Rest Blocks (plates attached to the accessory rail or stock) are not permitted.

I would like for everyone to report their score and equipment information as follows
Example:
Your name or screen name, Rifle, ammo, score. This is the line I copy for the end of month score.
(chuck40219, Winchester 52D #1, Center X, 200 14X)
Equipment list (rest front/rear, any thing special about your setup)
Weather/or shot indoors
Excuses: Anything you would like us to know about your shooting day.
Would be nice if you could post a photo of your setup.

I shot this target with 36X scope just to see the advantage of using glass. I think this shows how accurate Iron sights are.
I believe when the correct aperture size to target ratio is achieved it's remarkable.
Iron sights on an ARA unlimited target would not work as well.

are you getting any shooters? I'm pretty sure we have a stack of those targets in our target shed.
Yes we have shooters, but a little slow right now. Looking for things to get going later on as weather warms. I have had some health problems the last 6 months. I don't do cold weather anymore.

Please come join us. Shoot a target or two.

I was just given a 1940's ? Mossberg 44US (b) it has peep sights.Needs sighted in. I also have eight Savage Mark1 FVT single shot scout rifles with peep sights that need to be sighted in for scouts...so -yes it is cold. I'll take a look for those A23's

Some months back a fellow member here had this rifle for sale. Even longer ago I had sold one like it and others as I was tired of lugging the weight back and forth. And I found my much lighter Savage/Anschutz 64 would shoot about as well as any rifle I had ever owned. So as I am weak of the self disciplines of my resolves, I bought this rifle. I had a gunsmith figure out how to install a stud I could mount my Harris Bi-Pod on. He did a bit more work in the bedding, cleaned and inspected it. Today was my first day with it using it on the Bi-Pod. One other note, I had been having problems with my eyes and just had my old lenses replaced with new ones. In a few weeks I go for my last appointment and will get a new Rx so I can get glasses. My vision is perfect in my right eye and just a tad near sighted in the left. When I get the glasses I can shoot better as what I have now, to comply with range rules, is inexpensive plastic ones that I find difficult to use with the peep sights. It is good to be back.

Good shooting. The bipod is the only way to go IMO. Been using one for 10-12 years. I guess I'm too lazy to lug around 20 # of cast steel.

To me, the Bi-Pod makes sense as it is light and eliminates "cant" as an issue. I never liked using a benchrest front rest for shooting IR50/50 and the like games. I "steer" my rifle from the butt end.

I found it was a lot easier for me to handle sporter stock cant.

I may try and find my wind flags. I think I used to have a set here. They were so important shooting IR50/50 and the like. I love it when we have a day with almost no wind.
