This question regarding the .270 vs 30/06 has been going on for more than 3/4 of a century and will never be answered to anyone's satisfaction I guess! The '06 will shoot a heavier bullet but the .270 has more velocity and longer practical range. I've been shooting both for decades and lean towards the .270. It kicks a little less and will normally put the 100, 130, and 150 gr bullets pretty much in the same group while the /06 tends to throw different weight bullets to varying points of impact which makes it somewhat more "fussy" in getting "POA" to meet "POI"! But in a practical sense, there's not much difference between the two. The .308 was designed for our military to give "almost" 30/06 velocity in a smaller and lighter cartridge (which it does)and it's the same thing as the 7.62 NATO. It generally gives slightly better accuracy with lighter bullets than the /06.....All three cartridges are all time greats and have killed anything that walks the planet and that's a fact.

BTW, the felt recoil between the three really depends more on the style of stock and weight of the rifle then anyhting else. I 'spose if I HAD to rank them the 06 kicks most and the .308 least. There just ain't much "real world" difference...

My conclusion:

I did a little math and some reading and, as stated, there doesn't seem to be a material difference in recoil between the calibres. I'll stick with my Model 70 30-06, but get a nice recoil pad installed and try shooting lighter loads and bullets.

Thanks for all the info and opinions.

Sure can't go wrong with a M-70 in 30/06, that's been a deadly combo for many decades!!! Try shooting 165 gr loads, the '06 really shines with them IMHO....
