Yeah, I know, there's an ammo shortage.
How can I waste valuable 22lr on the same old same old.
Because I won't have to fire a single shot, it's already been done.
All I have to do is some target analysis.
It'll take a little bit to get this completed, but not 2-1/2 years like the 50 at 200.

Have ya' noticed, 5 shot group average ratings don't agree with 25 shot aggregates?
Several have shown smaller aggregate size better than as rated from the average of the 5 shot groups.
Those groups wander up and down depending on the mv for those 5 shots.
I've reached the point where 5 shot groups are almost a joke.
They are pretty much random acts of accuracy when compared with larger sample sizes.
Especially when you average them together in an attempt to compare cartridge quality.

jaia, I am not smart enough to follow what you are doing! Are five groups of 5 rounds each being fired and then one imposed over the other to get a 25 shot aggregate group.

L, I run AutoCad for a living.
I created a template of the base target over which I lay each shot target image.
Scale the target image to the template, then add the bullet holes for each 5 shot group.
Using the same center of bullseye I move each 5 shot group to a same reference point.
I end up with all 25 shots as copied from each 5 shot group on the same bullseye.
All are in the same position relative to the aimpoint on the original targets.
I'll add some images later today showing the step by step process.

Sounds like you are good at it, whatever it is! I was called a cad onetime but I think it is entirely different. Anyhow, why I mentioned it was if someone was firing 5 shot groups at five different aim points and they were being overlayed it would almost certainly show a larger aggregate than the individual five group sizes as the variable of the shooter and the gun being moved between the five different aim points would be introduced. I haven't been following your threads on the multiple shots, I may start.

I thought about the possibility of shifting point of aim with these targets L.
Decided it was unlikely due to it being indoors, off a bench, solid rest and bag.
Not like outdoors where you might have to compensate for wind drift.
In a tunnel, I'd dial my scope in for the mv of the ammunition.
Fire 5 to final adjust my scope, then leave it alone for the rest of the day.
Use the same point of aim on each bullseye shot.

If you want a fast education in ammunition variations,
try 50 shots at 50 dots and watch how trajectories vary with each cartridge fired.
I know I'm holding center of dot. I know the crosshair is remaining on the dot until I see the bullet impact.
There's no freaking wind and 18 pounds of Fuglie hasn't budged.
Why the heck did the round spiral almost half an inch left?
That one dropped in 3/8 inch low! That one flew 1/4 inch high!
It ain't me or the rifle, all on cartridge differences.

Draw a grid on a chunk of cardboard, 5 lines by 10 lines, an inch or two apart.
Then try to punch the intersect points at 50 yards and watch what happens.

I attempt it at 100 yards...

50 shots at 50 dots, on a single target, offers a much better diagnosis of cartridge quality than a few 5 shot groups.

This is the template before overlaying a target image

Align the image to the template

Overlay the bullet holes with 0.2" diameter circles

Move the group of circles to another copy of the template
using the same center of bullseye and border lines to reference placement.

Repeat for next bullseye and move over the next 5 shots

And fifteen shots aggregate

Repeat for as many groups as needed.
OnTarget does the same thing when using their software for group measurement.
Build aggregate groups referenced to the point of aim for as many groups as desired.

jaia, I know what you mean about ammo. Learned that lesson decades ago when I got my first 52. I got a second one because I thought it was the gun, LOL. Some ammo will drive you crazy and all ammo will frustrate you, but to varying degrees. You may be doing things differently but when shooting multiple targets with the same point of aim on the individual target if We had to shift the gun or our position it was very easy to shoot the same group or smaller just at a little different place on the next target using the same aim point, if you weren't extremely consistent.

Jaia, your dedication to this effort is praiseworthy.

If in the unlikely event that you ever find yourself with time on your hands, there are another, newer set of similar targets produced by the same guy. He uses the Bleiker and two other rifles at 50 and 100 yards. Of course, you may already be aware of this.

The targets that produced the results for the accurateshooter.com .22LR Rimfire Ammo Comparison Test are from 2010. The other results were posted in December 2012.

As an example, below is the target from 2010 for Eley Match. Below it is the Eley Match target from 2012, which was shot with the same Bleiker. Not surprisingly, the results were not the same from 2010 to 2012.

Link that other Bleiker target batch so I can continue after finishing these.
I can do a 5 group aggregate in about 5 minutes now that the template is set up.
Cheaper by far to build the aggregates than purchasing and testing myself.
Satisfies my OCD with much less time invested.

C30, some of the images are severely distorted.
Target was not flat when the images were snapped.
I verify the largest groups measured on each target.
That way I won't be off much, even with the skewed surface pics.

Quite a few 4 hole groups also.
Makes ya' wonder where that fifth one went.

This is a good point. Three bullet holes side-by-side, just touching each other would be a .440" group -- if the outside measurement was subtracted by .22" as the bullet hole size.



Of course the bullet hole in the target paper is smaller than .22". It varies according to the type of paper used but is usually between about .196 and .210". It would be possible to have a .440" (or even less) side-by-side group without the bullet holes actually touching. Regardless of the size of the deduction from the outside edge measurement, the actual center-to-center measurement itself remains constant.

Among the unknowns of the information in the accurateshooter.com results are if and when different lots of the same ammo were used for different distances and what, if any, cleaning or pre-record fouling was performed. All the shooting was carried out in a tunnel.

One other factor that may be a source of inconsistency in the results is that the shooter of the targets in question used a relatively simple front rest and rear bag. These may not contribute to the best consistency. After all, it's well known that serious BR shooters would prefer to use a BR-style stock with a one-piece rest when shooting for the most consistent results. That's not to say it's not possible to get good results with unsophisticated equipment, but that it's advantageous to use a better stock and rest.
