JereStahl,

What you maybe referring to is an ILLEGAL Weapon, IF it was once a rifle 'cut-down' to be a handgun......! !

"Once a RIFLE, ALWAYS a RIFLE" ...... BATF
What about an SBR? Does it have to have a minimum stock length?

I know an AOW needs two "hand-holds" so it wouldn't fit that category...a CIII can be any length but couldn't be registered except as a post-sample (unless it was registered prior to '86 IIRC).

Spend enough time with EBRs and AWs and you end up with a legalese migrane....

awp101,

Sorry if I confused you......! !

My Post was answering a 'newbie' [KISS], and it should not be taken as a "brief suitable for the Supreme Court"...... :D

Yes, the Laws are very complex and convoluted.....! ! :(

As I am running low on Advil, I will not go there....... :D

Nah, I was just thinking out loud about how you could make a lever action pistol w/o running afoul of the MIBs.:D

Rifles to Pistols

awp101,

The last I read on the subject [very dated] was about a gunsmith who 'cut down' a Win M62 pump .22 rifle and made it into a "pump pistol"..! ! :)

He ended up in "deep do do".....! ! :(

As long as it's a virgin receiver (ie never built into a rifle) and the 4473 is checked "pistol" when you pick up the bare reciever I believe it's OK.*

That's how some of the AR pistols and Krinkov AOW/pistols are being built.

*I am not a lawyer, I don't play one on TV nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. This is simply my understanding from having discussed the matter with gunsmiths over the internet who do these builds. As always check with your local (or even better get it in writing from the Technical Branch of the BATF(E)) to avoid any visitations by Bubba the cellmate in the middle of the night.**

**That should be enough CYA for anyone!;)

Cooper made a bolt action handgun as well as Kimber(predator), don't recall if these were repeaters.
Take care,

I'm not sure of the exact dimensions but to be legal a "rifle" must have a minimum barrel length (16", I'm pretty sure) and a minimum overall length........ I know for shotguns it is 18" min. barrel & 27" min. overall. As for using a "virgin" new action to build up a "pistol" - it does not matter that it has never "been" a rifle - if it was designed to be used for a rifle it is illegal to use it for a pistol.... Several people have got their tail in a crack with BATF over this....... DON'T DO IT!!!
