Some time back, there was a thread discussing different ways to carry additional 10/22 mags with you when going "afield", rather than just to the range. I thought that any type of pouch affair would have to hold each magazine seperatly so that you could keep loaded and empty mags seperate. It had to allow you to draw the magazine one handed, had to hold it securely so it wouldn't be lost while roaming the fields, woods, hills, etc. And it has to provide at least some protection from dust, dirt, debris, etc. Here are two Ideas I came up with. I purchased both of these at Wallmart. The total cost was around $11.00 and some time. The first is a butstock elastic rifle cartridge holder. It was originally designed to hold 9 rifle cartridges. (Be patient this is going to take several posts since I can't figure out how to post multiple pictures on one.)

By removing the second and third row of stitching, I have a pocket just about right to hold the magazine. It's held firmly and by putting it in sideways the mouth of the mag is protected from the elements.

I put the blue lines in to show the stitching that should remain, and the white lines show the stitching to be removed.

In this top view you can see how snugly the magazine is kept in place. And you can get an idea how far it sticks out from the stock.

I've only modified one pouch here, but when I'm done I will have room for three on the stock and one in the gun!

My Second pouch is made from a clam shell type shotgun choke tube pouch. Both these items were made by "Allen". It has belt loops on the back, a plastic snap hook on the side and zippers closed. This pouch will easily hold 4 mags and may be adaptable to eight mags. Heres the back showing the belt loops and the hook, the mag is for size referance.

This shows the inside of the case. It is originaly setup to hold six plastic tubes that hold shotgun chokes. I removed the stitching showed by the white dotted lines and put in one row of stitching in the center of the elastic band. The blue arrow points to the point where I did the stitching. The mags are shown part way out of the band just to show you their orientation. To fit four of the mags in the case they have to lay on their side or the case won't zipper shut. The mags are a little wider than the choke tubes were, but on thier side their is plenty of room in the case.

When I was looking over the pictures I took, it dawned on my that I might be able to insert a mag only halfway into the band and still have it secure. If that is so, I can put another mag into the band from the bottom so each band holds two mags. Bringing the capacity to 8 mags for the whole case.

Great ideas! Here's another!

I like the butt cuff idea! I think I'll pick a couple up and try the same thing! :) Thanks for the idea!

Another idea for you is BELT carry. I have a Ruger Redhawk and have leather, plastic and Cordura SPEEDLOADER pouches to carry my Speedloaders in. Don't ya know, a .44 Speedloader and a Ruger 10/22 mag are about the same size! :) Hence, I can use my speedloader pouches for 10/22 mags.

Yet another idea! I have my spare 10/22 mags currently in M1 Carbine mag pouches! Yep, each double mag pouch can hold two 10/22 mags perfectly!

There are so many ideas, we have to keep bouncing them off each other.

Thanks!

Went by Cabela's today. In their western gun leather section they have what they call a "Cylinder pouch". Made of good thick leather and has a snap down flap. I took one to the counter and asked to see a magazine out of a 10/22. Fits great. Looks tall enough to hold the magazines for the WRM and HMR too.

Not bad ideas Bigmac.

I really like the first one. Only one problem: I have Fajen Thumbhole? What do I do. Besides carry them in my pocket. I Would like like that for just carrying. IN my truck there is always one in the door or on the dash or somewhere.

Did you know: Three 10/22 mags, all with the front of the magazine facing you fit perfectly between the steering colomn and the edge of your dash, on the 88 through 96 GM Pickups. Thats 6 for easy access. ;)

The Uncle Mikes Speedloader pouch I have is made for 38/357 and will not hold a 10/22 mag. I don't know if UM makes a pouch for a .44. If they do, it might work for the LR, Not sure for the Magnums.

Magazine pouch for dual clips

I ordered several of the dual magazine holders from E&L MFG. this week (ph# 541-874-3107) they are $4.95 each. They also had a fair price on Ruger mags. ($11.95)

Here is a great way to carry the dual mags: M1 carbine magazine pouches. The dual mags fit perfectly.

LOL I was reviewing the thread and Plainsman beat me to it! :D

My grandfather had them. I think they are WWII surplus, and seem to be very well made.

MAJOR EDIT: I can't find them at CTD. Found multiple up for auction on Ebay.

I think you can get them from www.cheaperthandirt.com
(I did a quick search of the site but couldn't find the pouch. I have seen them listed in the catalog. You may have to give them a call.)

You may also find them at a gunshow. There are surplus dealers in Shotgun News who may stock them.

Thanks for reading my post above guys!

:p The Speedloader pouches in .44 and M1 mag pouches work WELL! :p

BTW, I tried the butt cuff idea with 12 ga shotshell cuffs!! I cut the second and fourth stitches out and it holds TWO mags perfectly with the center shell holder in place. The center one could hold a box of 50 rds if desired.

I also use one of the shotshell cuffs now for Butler Creek 10 rd mags. It's perfect! :)

I would carry the 25 rounders there too, but that's getting a tad bit bulky!

I use an Uncle Mike's loose cartridge pouch. It closes at the top with velcro and holds to clips end-to-end nicely. Easy one hand operation - open velcro and the two clips are laying there in the pouch. And of course it still also works as loose cartridge pouch.
