I'm new to this forum, but have been visiting for several months while I built my first 10/22. Now that it is complete, I'm intrigued by the .17HMR. Can a 10/22 MAG be converted to a .17 HMR by simply adding a VQ .17 THM barrel, or is there more to it than that?

Yes the conversion from 10/22 .22 Magnum to .17HMR is a barrel swap.

Actually, if you are going to use a Volquartsen barrel, you have to get a set of shims (Artifex sells them) for your 10/22 Magnum.

Lilja and Clark make drop-in barrels for the 10/22 Magnum, but Green Mountain and Volquartsen don't make them yet.

Not a straight drop-in, but it is quite simple with the shims.

If you get a Volquartsen 77/17HMR barrel, you'll be disappointed if you try to shoot it by just dropping it in your 10/22 Magnum.

So, either get a Lilja or Clark 10/22 Magnum 10/17HMR drop-in barrel or get the GM or Volquartsen 77/17HMR barrel and the shim kit.

When you change barrels
from 22Mag to 17HMR you will enjoy
shoot'in so much better.

Its also known as a 22Mag "Improved"
as soon as the 17 HMR barrel is put on
the rifle.

I was lucky enough to obtain a Ruger factory 96/17 take-off barrel. Exactly the same shank and extractor cuts as the 10/22M.

Conversion was a snap and the 10/17M runs as well as my other, somewhat lesser , 10/22M.

17 HMR

Well, I decided to just buy a VQ 17 HMR instead of modifying a 10/22 Mag. The 10/22 is almost $400, then $200 for the barrel. $70 for the Hogue stock, and easily another $100 or so to lighten the trigger pull and other little changes. Thats almost $800, and retail for the VQ is $970, so I can probably get it for around $900. So for about $100 more I get a VQ thats ready right out of the box. Not too hard to figure this one out. Thanks for all of your tips.

biglou_71, have you thought about trying the 10-22LR to 10-17 conversion that the Chief came up with?

Start with the base model 10-22, convert it to Magnum status and add a .17 GM barrel from WFMBS.

10-22LR=$159.99
Conversion=$0
10-22M magazine= $14.99
.17 barrel=$129.99 Blue, $139.99 SS
Hogue Stock=$70
VQ Hammer=$32
Total=$416.97

Knowing you made it yourself=PRICELESS!

Makes more cent$ to me.
