1/4" Club

Below is the original quote from Sawdust when he started the Grandfather of all games in RFC and more specifically SuperStock. He was tired of hearing "My rifle will shoot 1/8th inch groups all day long" This was his way of saying "Put Up or Shut Up":

In order to become a member of the SuperStock 25 Yard Quarter Inch Club you must post a picture of a single target showing four five shot groups with three of the four groups measuring 1/4" or less center to center. Four additional individual shots are required for measurement purposes.

The single holes are to be measured to the same accuracy as the groups, hopefully to .001". These four shots are to be averaged and that is the number to be subtracted from the max group width to determine the Center to Center group size. ( This is the standard for calculating center to center group size).

There are some rules.

1. Targets are to be shot at 25 yards.

2. Gun - any gun that is a SuperStock- no classes.

3. Ammo - shoot any ammo that you and your gun like.

4. Sights - anything you like.

5. Rests - shoot any position or rest that you want to.

6. Post a picture of your groups, all on one sheet, showing the groups, four extra shots for calculations and the calculated group sizes.

7. PLEASE measure and calculate the groups per the above so we all stay on the same page.

8. Posting - just post your pics to this thread.

Hope thats not too many rules.

So what do you get for shooting quarter inch groups at 25 yards? Strictly bragging rights. You can claim to be able to shoot quarter inch, or less, center to center groups three out of four times at 25 yards and have it documented.

The target pictures are fun to see and a picture and description of the gun and ammo are a great way to share information and let others see what it takes to shoot tight groups.

When the targets are posted to this thread I will add your handle to the members list.

As I am not at all bashful I will kick things off with some results from the second outing with my SuperStock.

There are some great guns being built here and the Members list should grow quickly.

Good luck.

Well we were just starting out and shooting a SuperStock is harder than a SuperSport because of weight so a rule change or two is in order:

Still four groups of 5 shots each but in SuperSport you have to shoot 4 out of 4 to make it.

Other than that why mess with perfection?

Good luck and I hope we see many names on this list:bthumb:

I read this and got to thinking.......... My Super Stocks are heavier than my Super Sports. I weighed them all and sure enough they are.

Okay so you way the heaviest SuperStock and the lightest SuperSport but what are MOST rifles going to be?

Also even so the tensioned barrels are supposed to be VERY accurate.

Let us be honest here. ANY good SuperStock or SuperSport with a half decent shooter can make this game. We have learned a lot in 8 years since Sawdust wrote the original rules. This is here for tradition and for beginning bench shooters and builders to gain confidence.

Vincent. You said the Super Sport rifles were haevier so they were easier to shoot. I was only saying that I checked and my Super Stocks weighed more. I find that the light rifles are just as easy to shoot and are very accuate . If they couldn't shoot under 1/4" at 25 yards I wouldn't keep them.
They have weight classes in competition because a heavy rifle is generally easier to shoot well. Benchrest is divided into Sporter, Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint because each is easier to shoot as they get heavier. Yes sometimes the light Varmint will beat the Heavy Varmint but it is generally accepted that a heavy rifle is easier to shoot well. Think about a 5.5 lb rifle bouncing around on the bags where a 15 pound rifle would barely move.

Virtually all forms of rifle competition have upper weight limits.

An Important thought...

We have gotten to the point that 1/4" at 25 yards does not impress us as much as it used to.

1/4" @ 25 is STILL less than 1 MOA and any semi auto that shoots less than 1 MOA at any range is still a pretty accurate rifle!:D

It doesn't take much tuning to get 1/4" @ 25 yards, I have to believe just about any of the decent aftermarket barrels are capable of this with a properly head-spaced bolt.

Absolutely right. We know how to build them but some folks are still learning how to shoot them that well. We forget now how hard it was for a some people to make this game. It took Ricochet weeks yet later he was not happy unless he was getting close to 1/8" groups. A couple people gave up altogether.

It is not always about the hammer. Sometimes it is the guy swinging it.

that is true too Vincent.
A lot of tricks around here. I think I still remember a few.:D
Maybe I'll get this rig from the LGS and play a bit.

That would be wonderful Chromie.:bthumb: You know you are welcome here rifle or not but it is always more fun when you have a rifle in it!!

We know you are a knowledgeable guy so if you can add to the "Tech Section" we will be building please feel free to show us how you build yours. You built some great SuperStock rifles!

At least I qualified for one game today.

eley club, 10/22 with kidd 20" .920 and a revolution laminate stock, que bolt and VQ trigger parts.

top left .389-.217 = .172"
top right .458 - .217 = .241" (too close for comfort!)
middle .399 - .217 = .182"
bottom left .354 - .217 = .137"

Thanks fellas! That is the one I built for my wife a few years ago. the LOP is a little short for me, but the kidd barrel and que bolt are a good combo. the VQ trigger stuff isn't my preference, but Ms. Chatterbox loves it.....

I almost made Rico's game with it, but the humidity was wrecking havoc on the ammo.
You did great!

so my new rifle seems to have qualified for the 1/4" game first time out, no adjustments other than sight in. Seems the kidd barrels are pretty consistent in their bedding preferrences.

.0925, .1740, .1695 and .1480

.2424, .2324, .1109 and .1024

What class is a Kidd Supergrade in?

I may have found a 25yd range to shoot at that's not 60 miles away. I took a look at the original description, but I'm not sure on the stock.
