Browning Buck Mark Pistol Grip Frame Sizes

Periodically someone posts a question about their Buck Mark pistol grips for the purpose of grip replacement. This thread is an attempt to identify the Buck Mark pistol frame (receiver) sizes for the various models. No attempt will be made for the barrel variations of these Buck Mark models as this has no bearing on the Buck Mark pistol frame.

As I was writing this thread I remembered the work produced by Chim, “Buck Mark Grip Frame information”, this thread is not intended to infringe upon his work at all.

Grip styles (not referring to frame/receivers) have changed over the years for many of the given models, some for the good, some not so. Even though this thread is about grip frame size there are some differences with the same model over a period of time, the differences do not affect the grips and will not be explored. Stainless models only affect the barrel and slide, the frame is the same on like models, i.e., blued or stainless. The point of this thread is to identify frame sizes and to help assist those wanting to find different grips (panels) for the size of their Buck Mark pistol.

Although it is not officially clarified, there are three Buck Mark frame sizes, UDX, UFX, and URX. Below are examples of these three Browning Buck Mark pistol frame sizes.

UDX

UFX

URX (New Rosewood)

Browning appears to be slowly starting to make a differentiation in their Buck Mark frame sizes. Many of the older Buck Marks do not have a clear model size labeling. I believe it would be a great benefit to all if Browning differentiated their Buck Mark pistol models by updating their serial number scheme; e.g., the S/N prefix for the UDX = 515, the UFX = 525, and the URX = 535, or something similar. With this type scheme one would know immediately what frame size was being referenced. A scheme such as this would not help those with pistols from the past.

Several Buck Mark model names were used for different frame sizes, e.g., “Plus”, this was used for the UFX (referenced as a UDX at the time) and URX and presently for the Buck Mark Fuchsia Plus; also the “Lite” is presently being used for the UFX and URX frame sizes. The barrels are what is in common with these pistols. This is understandable for one to want a certain barrel style on a frame that fits their hand.

The difference is obvious between the UDX frame with its finger groove scallop shape and the other two frames. The UFX and URX frames are similar in shape but different in size as the URX is narrower as can be seen in the photo above. Frame on left is a URX and the one on the right is a UFX. Note a little more curve on the bottom backside for the UFX. Photo by Chim

With 1911 grip adapters from Striplin Custom Guns (striplincustom.com) there are a ton of 1911 grips available for the URX and UFX grip frames. Striplin Custom Guns manufactures adapters for the URX (left) and UFX (right) frame sizes for use with 1911 grips panels. Photo by Striplin Custom Guns

The new 2016 Buck Mark Rosewood Challenge grips are a URX frame size. The Challenge was also manufactured between 1999 and 2010 with wood grips in the URX frame size. The most well-known URX has the one-piece rubber wrap-around grip.

The Browning Buck Mark Rifle was designed around the Buck Mark URX pistol frame. Grips from the Buck Mark Rifle are URX grip frame size.

The Buck Mark Grips produced by the Altamont Co. are for the UFX frame only, including their wraparound style.

Hogue has grips available for the UFX and URX frame sizes only.

Eagle Grips, Inc. has grips for the UFX frame.

In my research I found only grips from Browning for the UDX frame.

This identifies those pistols manufactured from 2016 and earlier.

Note: When changing grips from the original grips, check the screw length to make sure it does not protrude into the magazine well. Also make sure there are sufficient threads to properly secure the grip.

Thanks for the info and photos.

Browning apparently had some flexibility in packaging Buckmarks. My 2012 "Camper" (as per the label on the box) appears to be a "Practical" URX, packaged with extra magazines and sold under the Camper designation.

Aprilian - Thanks for the info I'll add it when I update it.

chj3 - I did see a reference to a Camper in the URF frame but have not verified that yet.

Label from the "Camper" URX box. It looks like a "Practical". Apparently it was a special package, with extra magazines and a soft case (rug). Bought it at Sportsman's Warehouse last year.

Can you tell me about this model? Is it a one-off Buck Mark Plus with UFX grips instead of UDX grips?

http://www.browning.com/products/fir...s-fuchsia.html

Also, would this fit on it?

http://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/...grips/B5150011

That page says it won't fit on UFX, UDX, or URX models. So what exactly does it fit?

The Buck Mark Plus appears to be a limited production pistol. It is built on the UFX frame.

The grips you are looking at says it is for a BM Classic Plus which is a UFX frame. Those grips would work on the BM Plus you are looking at. That combination would make a nice looking pistol.

This one reason I wrote this post, many offerings (like the MGW ad) do not understand the BM frame sizes.

Also, I am new to the BM world and still learning myself.

Yea, I was waiting for a model with the classic slab side barrel and without the UDX or URX frames. I just do not like the finger grooves that come with those pistols. Funny that the model I've been waiting for for comes with pink grips from the factory.

Not really, the Fuschia is marketed to women, who may prefer the smaller frame. Grips are easily replaced, don't be shy. That's what I did anyway.

Interesting. Are those grips (and also the one I posted) made for the silhouette and need additional hardware to mount on a UFX frame?

I believe both have the same carving (?) and fit the UFX frame, just different woods and finish.
