Mounting an Optic on Sobol, Legion Sobol or Korshun ... Scope Mount

Log in to see fewer ads
Recently, I was trying to determine how one could mount an optic
on a Sobol, Legion Sobol or Korshun.

Not my rifle ... TGI Auction Photo
The Sobol, Legion Sobol or Korshun do not have a weaver mount as the BI 7-2KO.
Instead the receiver is grooved.
The flange or rail formed by the dovetail is 12 mm wide.
Quote:
"TOZ-78", " TOZ -99", "Ounce", "Elk", "Sable", "Snipe",
"IZh-18MN", "IZh-94" - Taiga (guide width 12 mm)
And, the groove itself is 10.5 mm wide.
Quote:
Bracket C is designed for installation of optical sights
for small-caliber carbines such as "Sable" ... 10.5mm

Not my rifle ... TGI Auction Photo
These are uncommon specifications to say the least.
As such, the selection of optic mounts are very limited.

Scope Mount Solution I ... BSA Scope Mounts

Possible Scope Mount Solution I ... BSA Two-Piece Mounts
The most direct solution I've been able to find are the BSA two-piece scope mounts.
Quote:
Reversible clamp fits all dovetails from 9.3mm to 13mm.
However, I have some concerns of how far the scope centerline
will be offset for the rifle-bore centerline.

The reversible clamps accomodate a range of 3.7 mm (.146 in)
Using the clamps to fit a 9.3 width, the offset maybe approximately 1.2 mm (.047 in).
Positioning the clamps to work with a 13mm groove, the offset would be 2.2 mm (.098 in).

Scope Mount Solution II ... Dovetail-to-Weaver Adapter

Scope Mount Solution II ... BKL Dovetail to Weaver Adapter

The use of a dovetail-to-weaver adapter allows for more optic mounting possibilities.
However, it comes at a price ... the optic maybe positioned higher
above the bore-line than necessary.

Some of you probably are astute enough to recognize that 12mm (.472 in)
is a little larger that (11mm .433 in) by 1mm (.039 in).
This is not an insurmountable problem as BKL mounts are very adaptable:
Quote:
If mount slot is not wide enough to fit over dovetail of
the gun, widen the slot by removing the clamp screws
and placing them into the spreader holes. Hand
tighten the screws until they touch the inside wall.
Then, with the hex wrench, turn the screws in
increments of 1/4 turns until the slot widens to slide
over the gun dovetail. Remove screws and place them

back into the clamping position.

Scope Mount Solution III ... EST Bracket C

Scope Mount Solution III ... EST Bracket C for Sable (Sobol) rifles.

This Russian mount is a generic design with a variant for the Sobol - or Sable as known in Russia.

A practical aspect of this mount, the factory open sights are still usable.

Quote:
Bracket C is designed for installation of optical sights
for small-caliber carbines such as "Sable", having an upper threshold.
If necessary, Sight with the bracket can be easily removed
or installed on the weapon.
The apparent advantage of the bracket is that while you can use
an optical sight and open sight rifle.
However, this feature causes the telescopic sight to be placed higher above the bore-line.
But, it not available in the U.S.
Perhaps, it could be special ordered through Kalinka Optics Warehouse.

I've used the BKL 253 or 254 cantilevered mounts.

http://www.bkltech.com/category_s/57.htm

You will have to remove the scope each time you want to pull the bolt unless you use an extended eye releif scope for a scout rifle, and then you run into issues with the rear iron sight.

Ask the Factory ... Variable Scope, Red Dot, Reflex Sight

Yes, it would be very appreciated if you would ask the factory.
What would be very helpful are recommendations on:
Variable Power Scope
... low-power 1.5x to 5x - 2nd Choice
... mid-power 2x to 7x - 1st Choice
... upper mid-power 3x to 9x - 3rd Choice

Red Dot with 1 moa dot
... dot - 2nd Choice
... dot with reticle - 1st Choice

Fix Power Scope - instead of Red Dot
... 2x to 3.5x

Reflex Sight
And, of course mount selections for each.

I know this maybe asking a lot.
But, I have three Legion Sobols to mount optics on.
I hope to equip one rifle will have a variable scope.
Another, with a red dot or very low-power scope.
And, the last rifle with a reflex sight.

Actually, if possible, I have intend to use quick-detach rings
to deal with routine maintenance and cleaning issues.

Resourceful Russian Solution ... Weaver 94/22 Top Mount Base

Resourceful Russian Solution ... Weaver 94/22 One-Piece Top Mount Base TO-10 (48202)

A very resourceful Russian found an American sourced adapter base mount for his Sobol.

The Weaver one-piece, top mount base for the Winchester 94/22.
It is the model TO-10, stock number 48202.

The Weaver top mount appears to be a clever, uncluttered but effective scope mount base solution.
However, if you look closely, part of the the rear sight has been removed.
Probably for objective lens clearance.

I asked my contacts in Russia about this, and they came back with this photo and said they could supply these rings to me if needed. They claim the inside diameter of these rings is 24.5mm.

They also warned that you have be careful with ring and scope selection when mounting on these so as the optic doesn't come in contact with the iron sight.

Manufacturer and Model

Any idea of the manufacturer and model of the mounts?
The reason I'm asking is to determine the distance from the groove
to the scope centerline.
Quote:
Distance from the base to the center holes of the sight - 36mm.
It is hard to tell from the photo.
But, I think this maybe the integral mount and ring depicted in the photo.
Bracket vertical type VII
Quote:
Manufacturing - Vologda Optical and Mechanical Plant (VOMZ)
From the illustration, it appears a 42mm lens maybe
the largest objective permissible.
As such, I appreciate the caution on rear sight clearance.

This is a mighty tall set of of scope mounts and rings.
With this set-up, I wonder if the bolt pivot pin be removed
without disturbing the scope?

EST Mount on Izhmash Sobol

This is a photo I found of the EST mount on an Izhmash Sobol.
Note the finger tightening knobs on the base.
Quote:
Sight with the bracket can be easily removed or installed on the weapon.
The apparent advantage of the bracket is that while you can use

Tighten the nut 4.
Shaking his sight, make sure the reliability of its consolidation.
With the help of "amplifier", for example, a coin,
tighten the compression nut until it stops.

I wonder if there is enough clearance at the eye piece
to remove the toggle bolt pivot pin.
A moot point if the mount is easily removable and will re-zero.
However, there is no mention of return-to-zero capability.

High mount in-order to be able to use the factory iron sights.
\
If you enlarge the image the rear sight blade can be seen
though the mount sight tunnel.
