CM-2 Rear Sight Mod - Anschutz Iris

So, I'm planning on shooting 3p with my cm-2 and wanted to add an adjustable rear iris. Unfortunately, the threads on the rear sight of the cm-2 are a standard for the rest of the world but not standard for target sights 9mm x 1mm thread pattern. The normal thread pattern for rear sights is 9.5mm x 1mm. I couldn't find out if Gehmann makes an iris with this thread pattern but I didn't think they did so I was trying to think through other solutions. I thought about getting an adapter made but those who I talked to didn't have a 9.5 x 1 tap and would only be able to make it "close" with a near sized standard tap. It would need to be secured with teflon tape or thread locker. I could bring the threads of the Iris down to the 9 x 1 threads of the Izhmash sight, but that means the sight can only be used on the cm-2. I found a place that would make me a 9.5 x 1mm tap so that I could expand the threading on CM-2 rear sight to accept standard Iris's and have it fit perfectly, or as perfectly as I could tap it. I went very slow with the tap using about 1/16 to 1/8 turns and clearing often, lubed with a little cutting oil. All in all not that difficult, and more reasonably priced than putting on a new rear sight. Here's some pics:

I have to go to town today so range test will have to wait untill tomorrow.

Insert Adapter

Neal Johnson's Gunsmithing, Inc. stocks a thread adapters
that will allow for conversion to aperture sight inserts of different threads.

For example, converting American threads (larger) to Metric threads (smaller).
The 7/32x40 thread is significantly larger than the OEM M9 hole.

On your CM-2, the rear sight would need to be plugged.
Then, drilled and tapped for 7/32x40 threads.
Afterwards, the conversion insert could be installed.
A machine shop can perform this task precisely for you.

The installed insert adapter will accept an M9.5 iris.
Gunsmithing Inc. - Iris Adapter 7/32x40 (American) to 9.5mm (European) $17.95
If you wish to revert to the original Izhmash CM-2 peep insert,
purchase an additional 7/32x40 thread adapter.
And, modify it by installing a helicoil M9 thread insert.

The M9 modified 7/32x40 thread adapter will now
accept the OEM Izhmash CM-2 peep sight inserts.

Was looking at some biathalon stocks online.... when I came across an Izhmash Adjustable Iris at Larsen Biathalon.

Izhmash Iris

Their North American Distributor is http://www.altiusguns.com

I haven't called them to see if they have them but if anyone does they would.

Great find Ptarmigan.
I visit the Larsen site regularly and never noticed.

A note of caution.
The front sight on my Larsen Biathlon Recruit Rifle is not a standard Izhmash globe - takes ANSCHÜTZ inserts.

I'm not certain the rear sight is a stock Izhmash - probably is.
Calling Altius before ordering would be the prudent thing to do.
By the way, Marc Sheppard of Altius is a stocking dealer for Larsen.

They have an adjustable front Iris that I was going to call about, but it looks pretty long. I think it has a shade on it. I also noticed that the biathlon rifles load the aperatures from the side of the sight toward the shooter while the CM-2 load from the side toward the end of the barrel, meaning that the end of the front iris would project past the end of the barrel.

Just hoping to stumble across an adjustable iris for the ishmash front sight.

Some Vostok Urals came with an adjustable rear iris, mine did. The front sight on my Ural uses Anschutz size front sight inserts however you must clip off the larger of the two locating studs and place the small stud on the right side of the sight assembly. I still have not found inserts to fit my other Vostok it is smaller than the Anscutz inserts but larger than the Lyman 17. I feel very fortunate that the Ural came with a knock off Anschutz olympic style rear sight.
