Irons Only...Antique / Modern

Log in to see fewer ads
No scopes, No dots, No reflex sights...just good old iron sights....

Two catagories...
Antique...any rifle that qualifies under the established rules of SuperStock Bolt that was manufactured prior to the "Gun Control Act of 1968".....
This includes those old rifles made before serial numbers were required.

Modern....any rifle that qualifies under the established rules of SuperStock Bolt that was manufactured after 1968.

Any type of iron sight including V-notch, U-notch, square notch, and peep sights.
To avoid conflicts, no dual sights like scope over irons with "see thru" rings.

The Game.....
5 shot groups, 4 groups per target plus 4 sepperate measuring shots.
3 out of 4 groups must come in at or less than 3/4" or .750" all targets must be shot at a distance of 25 yards.

Use any target of your choice as long as it contains 4 crosshairs or bulls with enough room to include your 4 measuring shots so they are clearly sepperate from the group shots.

Using calipers, measure each of your 4 measuring shots, add them up and divide by 4, this will be your subtracting average. Now measure the farthest distance of your 4 groups, subtract the average from the measuring shots and this will give you a center to center distance of your groups. If at least 3 of these groups measure at or less than 3/4" or .750" you're in....

Scan or photograph your winning targets, up load them to a photo hosting sight such as Photobucket, then attach the image link with your post. A photo of your rifle is good, but not required.
When posting a winning target, please include information about your rifle....(Antique or Modern, type of sights, any mod's, and ammo used)....also include some general information about the weather and any other conditions that may have effected your shooting in a good or bad way.
Please note the following addition to the game rules: (they will apply to all submissions placed after 3/26/2008).....
Targets submitted for this game should be targets recently shot while attempting to qualify for this game, this means digging up old targets you shot previously, and submitting them for this game will no longer fly. All targets should be marked in pen with the date, and "SS/B Irons Only", along with rifle, ammo, and all other information. All targets submitting must include the 4 sepperate measuring shots, and all calculations clearly marked.

Any contestant that doesn't own a set of calipers, or doesn't know how to post a photo or scan of their target, feel free to PM me for my mailing address, and I'll be glad to score your target and post it for you

This is a fun challenge, especially for us old guys sporting bi-focals, enjoy and enter as many rifles that you have.......

Darn it Tony , now I got to hunt up the iron sights that go on the Remington 511 and Sams Savage MK II.

Oh my pocket book is going to be hurting with all the ammo I'm going to have to buy.

I'm going to have to find the ones that go on the 511. I had a hard time with teh SS/A Irons game but want to give this one a shot to. Now I have to go look up the ser on it and see when it was made.

Would be able to shoot the CZ in it had I not cut the barrel off . Now I'll have to by a front sight for it first. Thats on my to do list.

Good on you Tony!
I was hoping something like this would welcome all those classic open sight sporters to this forum.

I'm in. I've never tried to shoot irons for groups, so I'll have to practice. I wish I knew the year of my Springfield...no serial #

I don't have a 22 bolt with irons!
Now, see what you are making me do? I'm gonna have to buy another gun. And, then, tell my wife that YOU made me do it!

Seriously, that's a great idea. Just wish I had one that would play. Maybe soon.

That shouldn't be too big of a problem Bigfoot....Rico told me you're filthy rich......(or did he say you were just filthy...I can't remember).....

I did just the opposite at SS/A Rigger, shot my T/C R-55 for the "Irons Only" game, then took the iron sights off to accomodate a scope. I', accumulating several empty plastic .22 ammo boxes with labels on them....."10/22T Parts"......"T/C R-55 Parts"....etc....etc..... that way I'll be able to find everything and the screws needed to reattach it if the need arise.....

For those of you that own bolt's without iron sights, I presently do not have any in working condition that will accept a scope, that is until I get my old Mossberg 142A back to health, it's on life support right now......

Now get those eye glass prescriptions undated, and go give it a try......

Remington 581, old Redfield peep sight rear, Williams Shorty Ramp front.

25 yards, benched, Walmart Winchester XPert ammo.

Don't have separate "subtracting" shots on this target but I don't think there's any doubt that these groups are all well under the qualifying 3/4". If anyone wants to print out and measure for themselves, the black squares are exactly 2".

Just FILTHY!

But, I am selling one today. And, "GUN" money is to be used only for "GUNS" right?

Way to go Tony!
My Winni and I are in!
I hope my progressive lenses are up to the task.

Now where can I get a decent set of calipers?
I've never even tried to measure my groups before.
I generally just shoot for the fun of it.
