doumb question for BB mag owners ....

Log in to see fewer ads
I've been thinking about getting one of the .22Mag BBs
My question is this....
I was wondering if you guys (and women) think it would be a problem re-chambering it to .17HMR. I know that it would be expensive, being i know of only one person who advertised that they can change BB barrels. And I would end up getting a Lilja barrel for it.
What I'm looking for is... Do you think that the pressure difference would be a problem?
Thanks,
Bob Barker

Have you asked the advertizer this question?
Incidently, who is the advertizer?

Could it be:

Yup, That's them
I sent them an e-mail about a week ago about it....
Haven't gotten a response yet...
I didn't know if it was just that stupid of a question (that it wasn't worth their time), or that they just hadn't gotten around to answering it.
So I figured that I's ask the people here, who know a lot more about the rifles than I Do.
And again, If it's a dumb question... Sorry for asking.
Thanks again,
Bob Barker

I think any good gunsmith could re-barrel the BB.
I tried to take my barrel out one day with a machinist
Friend of mine. And we found that the barrel is a slip
fit. But here is where I decided not to go any further
the barrel is glued in & the barrel would have to be
heated up. So I pulled the plug on the project.
Because I didn't know how the phosphate finish would
hold up to the heat. Bluing can handle a lot of heat & be OK.
So I was not prepared to re-blue the receiver also.
If you re-barrel it, its a given the new barrel will be blued unless its SS.
I would think the BB would be OK with the .17 HMR.
I think EAA was going to have some BB's offered in .17 HMR or .17 Mach 2
before they lost there importing rights for Izhmash firearms.
Mine is a .22LR & was going to install an GM 10/22 bull barrel.
I get some wild idea's some times also.

I wonder what type of glue they use and what other Russian rifles have this setup? My understanding of gunsmithing is very limited. This could be a very common practice but I find it very interesting.

Best,

Bonding of Metal

The bicycling industry has been bonding dissimilar metals for more than two decades.
In the the 80's and 90's, extruded aluminum was bonded to cast or forged aluminum components.
And, aluminum was also joined to steel frame/sub-frame components.

For the most part, the bonding agent was a high strength, engineering grade epoxy.

Izhmash is probably using a proprietary aerospace formula adopted from the struggling aviation and space industries - cross-over technology.

If heat is applied to remove the barrel, the damaged phosphate coating would need to be restored/refinished.
There are some metal finishing business specializing in military firearms that are capable of re-phosphating a firearm.

It would be interesting to find out how Mr. Sheppard is joining the separated receiver with its new barrel.

I was hoping that he would be able to thread the new barrel on....
Then again, I've only seen one in person (and KICK my own butt for not buying it on site).
I didn't think to look at the receiver-barrel mounting then. Now all I have to look at are fairly small pictures.
I'll just have to call him and find out.

And on a side note.
I don't suppose that any of you might know of any sites that would carry Birds-eye maple for a rifle stock (Mannlichers style)
I was talking to Mr. Gatewood about this project about a year ago. I just haven't found the wood yet.
This would be the rifle it would go on.
Thanks again
"Bob"

EDIT:

I just called the nice people at Altius (I guess my e-mail had just gotten lost in the ether : ). The person I talked to was happy to answer my question(s).
The barrel is epoxied in (from the factory). When the new barrel is installed, it is press fit in. I was told that it would be about $500 for the new barrel (Krieger) and installation. And about $100-150("ballpark figure") to have the left-hand crossover installed.
And the 17HMR shouldn't be a problem.

So when I head out for my next "deployment" (if you can call 130 days a deployment), Ill send my rifle (when I get it) to him for the work.
I'm also looking at a Leupy' VX-7L 3.5-14 for it (after the stock in done)

Thanks
"Bob" Barker

Maybe what you're really looking for is a Sobol by Legion formerly imported by TG International - by the way, it is available in .22 WMR
