My new BB (SSSV-99 project rifle)

Well gang,

I purchased the latest BB from Dave Simons last week. Dave, if you read this, thanks again! I just wish it had more "figure". (inside joke gang )

I mounted a cheap 2.5-10 scope (better glass will be on the SSSV-99 so don't worry) on it today and I'm going to zero it in for CCI CB's. That will allow me to have some fun with it while before I send it off to get the new SSS barrel.

I'm going to call Shilen this coming week and find out what the deal is with the 1-10" twist barrel. If it's a go then the gun will be sent off in a few weeks but until then the CB's will be getting put down the tube.

Anyhoo, it was made in '02 and my suppressed bb was made in '03. Here's a few comparison pics.

Everyone knows what the rifles look like so I'm going to highlight the differences.

Stocks. Other than the color the Blondie is geared towards right hand shooters due to the cheekpiece while the other one is more ambidextrous.

Notice the Blondie stock is shorter when both muzzles are on the carpet.

The "butt" is also smaller and a bit more fancier.

The Blondie also has a narrower firing pin which is on the bottom.

Hopfully by this summer I'll be able to post a picture of the Shilen barreled BB.

I am glad to see the BB go to a good home, it was just not getting enough attention where it was and was beginning to feel neglected.

I donít know about you TS, but I donít think I would like to explain that inside joke.

Yeah, we might get the self appointed stock police after us. I'm already in deep poo with my cheap Chinese scopes that work from the pompous Scope aficionados.

pic#4 looks very much like the SV-99 stock...

http://www.homegunsmith.com/cgi-bin/...;f=22;t=12764;

Perhaps you could get some guidance on making one there.

Otherwise, I have seen takeoffs from the AWB compliant thumbhole stocks for AK's which would probably make a good start for your SV-99 look.

Thanks for the link. I'll check out the threads.

As for the stock I've broken my decision down to either buying an un-inletted stock or make my own and then have it inletted.

I didn't have a chance to call Shilen yet but I will. The 1-10" twist is still listed so either they don't update their website that often or the 1-10" twist works with the SSS. Only a phone call will get down to the truth.

I've seen some really interesting "Finish yourself" ALA "Richard's Microfit" style air rifle stocks that I wouldn't mind having on a BB. I contacted them about getting an uninletted stock but no response yet. They are either still laughing or not even going to waste the energy to reply to the request.

Oh well, I'll find something.

Well,

I just got off the phone will Mr. Shilen and he basically said that the 1-10" twist isn't offered.

OK so I move on to a better barrel....Lilja and their 3 groove 1-9" twist barrel. I'm waiting on a reply but I think that I'll have a better barrel/rifle in the long run.

More to come.

Well it begins.

The final verdict is still being worked out but here is what the SSSV-99 will have.

1) Fluted Stainless 3 groove 1-9" Lilja barrel finished at 20".

2) Threaded for one of my three suppressors but will have it's own very shortly. Gotta mow more grass for Uncle Sam.

3) Due to the removal of the factory barrel I will need to have the receiver painted so I'm going to have the Lilja barrel painted as well....all matte black.

I've been corresponding with Dan Lilja for awhile now on this project and he's had very positive responses from those who have bought 1-9" twist SSS barrels.

I'm really looking forward to this project and now all that is needed is the stock which I'm waiting on several replies.

Stock Graft: Sobol with Biathlon 7-4

ToxicSports,

Russian American Armory Company

How about grafting the action and forearm section of a Sobol

With the buttstock and grip section of a Biathlon 7-4

There maybe enough wood aft of the pistol grip for a thumbhole to be cut.

Little or no action inletting would not be reqired.
The major woodworking required would be to blend the two stock sections together.

Blended RAA Sobol and Biathlon 7-4 Images with thumbhole in-proportion with SV-99 stock.
(Thanks to my Perfectionist, in denial, Wife)

That's not a bad idea. I'm hopefully going to get in touch with the stock maker this week to see what he was to say. I may go ahead and get two for both rifles. If that doesn't work then I'll look into the hybrid rifle stock.

I spent around $1800 total last fall for all three suppressors and the gun smithing (threading, some other work) of the three hosts.

I figure that I can spend that for the project rifle and two stocks. If it costs a bit more then so be it. I quit drinking and smoking many years ago so I could afford more toys and so far it's been paying off greatly.

Biathlon 7-4: Radical Stock Surgery

Or,
How about taking the 7-4 stock and perform radical surgery to:

Izhmash JSC

1. remove as much wood as possible to reduce weight.
2. fabricate a thumbhole. (add material on comb above pistol grip if necessary)
3. keep the magazine holder (something the SV-99 doesn't have)

Give your gunstock maker a picture of an SV-99
And, let him have at it.

SV-99 Sniper Rifle (Russia )

Maxim Popenker

I'll bet you, a good stockmaker can create a reasonable facsimile.
By the way, the trigger guard of the 7-4 maybe easier to use with gloves

Man, I'd give anything if there was a tape measure lying next to that stock. I think it's very doable though. Where could one find a suitable blank?

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...?Item=71998395 This would make a good starting point for the rear of the SV99 stock.

Great ideas. I have two stock makers lined up so I'll wait to hear what each has to say before I start making the final stock decision.

Who knows, I may even go with something completely different and not look anything like a SV-99 stock? I have two rifles that will need stocks so I have plenty of space to play with.

BI 7-2-ko Vs SV-99

TS,

Take a look at this 7-2 KO I found at a Russian websitel

KARABIN HUNTER BIATHLON 7-2-KO

Wouldn't this 7-2KO stock make a good basis for replica SV-99?

Just goes to show you ... the stuff we don't (can't) get.
Sure would be nice to have a personnal contact in Russia.

Well,

If S&K can look into inletting for the Biathlon Basic I'll settle for an Anschutz thumbhole or BR50. They can stand in until they start to duplicate the SV-99 stocks. (HINT...HINT )

I'll wait to see what S&K does before I call the custom stock makers. I van wait.
