Winchester Gone Russian: Wildcat 22 (aka TOZ 78-12)

Log in to see fewer ads
I was browsing the Winchester Website for changes since the New Haven Plant closed. I noticed this:

Quote:
The Winchester Wildcat 22 is crafted from world-wide sourcing under the top quality specifications of Winchester.
Wildcat PDF Flyer

Quote:
The Wildcat is a live one. It may possibly be the best bolt action 22 value in history. The Winchester Wildcat 22 is crafted from world-wide sourcing under the top quality specifications of Winchester. Look closely and you'll see the kind of features that make a great little gun. But you won't really appreciate it fully until you take it to the range and experience the kind of accuracy that establishes the Wildcat as a true over-achiever. With correct loads and a little skill, you'll cover your groups at 25 yards with a dime, and a quarter will take you out to 50 yards.

21" Sporter weight barrel.
22 Long Rifle with semi-target chamber for top accuracy.
Polished bore and precision rifling.
Micro adjustable rear sight with fold-down design for full clearance when mounting a scope.
Classic Winchester details like checkered buttplate (with embossed Winchester crest) and a durable composite pistol grip cap.
Cut checkered hardwood stock with Featherweight styling right down to the Schnabel fore-end tip.
Three 10-round magazines and one 5-round magazine included - that's correct, four total.
Easily removable, field strippable bolt for easy maintenance.
Forward magazine release so the magazine pops right into your hand for easy retention.
Advanced trigger system offers safety and a lighter trigger pull for accuracy.
Does this rifle resemble the Small-Bore Hunting Carbines TOZ-78 or what

Small-Bore Hunting Carbines TOZ-78

Quote:
They are intended for professional, amateur hunting and sporting. These simple and reliable carbines provide easy handling. Reloading is carried out manually by means of a sliding breech bolt. The drum rear-sight mechanism is adjusted for shooting at distances of 25, 50, 75 and 100 m. There is a closed front sight adjustable on vertical and horizontal lines. It is possible to mount an optical sight. There are trigger pull and trigger creep adjustments. The standard set of TOZ-78 includes an optical sight.
Models TOZ-78-05 and TOZ-78-06 have an extra heavy barrel; they are used only with an optical sight. An export version of models TOZ-78-04 and TOZ-78-06 is with twists on the muzzle part, which allow applying extra choke tubes.

SOUVENIR

Quote:
The stock and the fore-end are made of high-quality walnut or beech. The model of souvenir manufacture is decorated with a highly artistic hand engraving, inlay with precious metals, pearl and wood-carving.

It resembles the TOZ-78, because that is what it is. based off of how well mt TOZ-78 shoots, I will buy one of these. I really like the nicer stock and the Americanized stock.

Its a handsome rifle, no two ways about it. I especially appreciate the changed sights - its Russian prototype has some issues with scopes and high forward sight.

I'm keeping the TOZ though.

Yep, they close their New Haven plant, import Russian firearms that aren't even their design. They've probably sold all the machine tools to make the 9422 to the Taurus so they can butcher a really well made rifle.

Just a sign of the times . . .

. . . the cost of building in a foreign country is less than here. The TOZ 78 rifle is available for $130 right now. The only way Winchester can win is buy distribution rights and sell them as their own. I was lucky to score in the For Sale / Trade forum below - a fellow RFCer wanted to let his TOZ go for what I thought a reasonable price - $100. With 2 - 5 round and 2 - 10 round magazines (which between us girls look a bit flimsy, but so far - no problems with them at all). This was the standard 'blond' stocked Russian model.

Unless public is willing to buy $400 rifles vs. the foreign half priced models. CZs are priced less than American, but are well made. Whats a consumer to do?

The TOZ?

Forget that thing!

I want one of the Swiss K-31's $129 These are exceptionally well built, finely machined, STRAIGHT pull bolt actions. The round is equal to .308 and is a .30 cal. I have seen them shoot MOA with iron sights. I would not be able to shoot it that well but I can try Great Site.

Oh yeah . . . the K31s are a fantastic bargain. I have a couple of them myself - S&K mounts makes a 'scout type' of scope mount for a forward scope position if you ever change your mind about going with a scope. Replaces tangent rear sight with no drilling / tapping. The reason for scout position is the rifle is a top eject, so scope is offset to either side or scout mount is mandated. Also a pair of micrometer peep sights are available but bring your mastercard - it 'spensive!!

The hand select is worth it - I have one standard beech model, and two walnut stocked hand selects. Best place I've seen for ammo is Dan's Ammo - 480 rounds with 10 stripper clips for $159 plus s&h. Good folks as well.

Hope this helps Vincent.

I love my toz 78!
Nice light, accurate rifle. The bolt is a little rough but for $125.00cdn shipped and taxed I'm happy
The front sight works perfectly with the williams fpgr peepsight I put on the receiver.
The front sight is solid with a round hood and post that is adjustable.

Info from website
http://www.classicarms.us/
THE SWISS ARE KNOWN FOR WATCHES, CHOCOLATE AND THE PRECISION WORKMANSHIP, HIGH QUALITY AND ACCURACY OF THEIR K-31 RIFLES

Manufactured at the Eidgenossische Waffenfabrik, Bern (EWB) Switzerland. K31 straight-pull bolt rifle, crown jewel of the Schmidt Rubin family and vastly superior weapon to the earlier Schmidt Rubins, has an outstanding reputation for accuracy as its double stage trigger has a consistent final let-off of about 3 1/2 pounds. You can consistently achieve minute of angel groups. An outstanding Infantry Weapon of Swiss Defence Force was in service until it was replaced by SIG M57 select fire assault rifle. Standard front post sight adjustable for windage, rear conventional military tangent type graduated from 100 to 1,500 meters. Semi-pistol grip stock with a sling bar let into the left side of the butt, 6 rounds detachable box magazine
I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THESE. WE JUST RECEIVED A VERY SMALL SHIPMENT OF K-31 SWISS STRAIGHT PULL RIFLES. NOW IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE RIFLES YOU KNOW THAT THEY HAVE BASICALLY BEEN KNOWN AS THE UGLY RIFLES THAT ARE REALLY ACCURATE. HECK, THE INDUSTRY EVEN COINED A PHRASE ( BEAVER CHEWED STOCKS) TO DISCRIBE THE TYPICAL CONDITION OF THESE RIFLES. SO YOU CAN IMAGINE MY SKEPTICISM, WHEN ONE OF THE SMALLER U.S. IMPORTERS CONTACTED US AND SAID THEY HAD JUST BROUGT IN A SMALL LOT OF THE NICEST K-31 RIFLES EVER IMPORTED.THE PRICE WAS MORE THAN WE WERE ACCUSTOMED TO HOWEVER WE WERE TRIPLE ASSURED OF THE QUALITY, AND THE OTHER IMPORTERS WERE ALL OUT, SO WE DECIDED TO GIVE THEM A TRY. THEY ARRIVED TODAY, AND WE WERE VERY PLEASED. THESE ARE THE NICEST K-31'S WE HAVE EVER SEEN. THEY ARE NOT BRAND NEW BUT I WOULD RATE THEM AS A HIGH, VERY GOOD SURPLUS CONDITION. THE STOCKS SHOW A GLOSS FINISH WITH SOME MINOR HANDLING AND STORAGE MARKS. THE BLUING IS PROBABLY 85 TO 90 % WITH MOST OF THE WEAR SHOWING ON THE SHARP EDGES. BORES ARE IMMACULATE. MOST, BUT NOT ALL HAVE MATCHING #'S ALL THE WAY AROUND INCLUDUING THE MAGAZINE , AND SOME EVEN HAVE THE ORIGINAL TROOP I.D. TAG UNDER THE BUTTPLATE. (DON'T KNOW WHAT THE I.D. TAG IS. THIS IS REALLY NEAT GO TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE FOR THE PHOTO AND THE REST OF THE STORY..)
ALL ARE BASICALLY THE SAME CONDITION WISE BUT WE ARE SELLING THEM AT 3 DIFFERENT PRICES BASED ON YOUR WANTS & NEEDS
