Woodsman Grip Screw

Since I didn't have a first pattern Woodsman, I purchased one at the recent Tulsa Gun Show. When I got home I noticed that the grip screw actually protrudes through the grips by about 1/16 inch. In looking at some Colt part listings, they indicate that the screw for first series Match Target grips was slightly longer than for the standard grips. If this is the case, I may have a screw for Match Target grips instead of standard. I don's want to order another screw only to get the same thing I already have, so my question is, are there different length grip screws?

Yes there are different lengths.

The Pre Woodsman and 1st Series Target model have a grip screw that is 7/8" shaft length and is Blued.

The 1st Series "Bullseye" Match Target with Elephant Ear(E.E.) Wood Stocks has a longer 1 1/16" sometimes fitted to 1.00" shaft length, nickel plated.

The 1st Series "Bullseye" or Target models that has been fitted with Plastic Military Stocks would have the same (E.E.) 1 1/16" length shaft yet Blued in finish.

Thanks Tom,
The screw that I have is a blue 1 1/16. Guess I'll keep an eye out for a 7/8 version.

Why not just shorten the one you have?

Not a full length threaded screw.
There are a limited number of thread on the 1 1/16".
Cut to length and you will not be able to tighten it correctly.
However, if it is tightening the stocks correctly now, than the 1 1/16" screw can be shortened easily.

I found one online for four bucks which prevents me from messing up a screw someone down the road might need. Not that difficult to shorten it, but it's a bear to try and lengthen.

Great information! I just played musical grips and parts with pieces on my 1st series. It came with the plastic military longer grips but one was broken in half. Bought a set from numrich that came with hardware but of course the screws were to short and my original screws thread pitch didn’t match the grip nuts on the new ones. Had to pop out and switch those so I got new grips with the old but nickel plated hard ware. I’m just happy to be able to shoot it.
