I have been playing with removing the dot sight, shooting open sights then reinstalling the dot. So far, the dot returns very close to zero requiring one click to get it back to zero.

Might try no coffee vs my daily 4 cups one time just to see what happens!

zukiphile

I am with you on open sights being the most fun to shoot especially when plinking at broken blue rock and misc stuff on the ground. Its easier to see where you miss or hit. Keeping a record though my red dot scores probably average 30 points higher and groups off a bag are usually cut in half.

Grandsons football game today at 11:30 but you guys make me want to head out with some targets this morning.

Zukiphile is currently leading the 25 yard class, but his range doesn't allow shorter distances, so ALL his shooting (AFAIK) for score is at 25. But he still admits to having some less than impressive targets.

If you guys keep talking about the wobbly dots, it's going to talk me out of getting an optic for my Ruger. I'm thinking about taking the plunge... no rush but in the next year or so. That should give me time to get used to my new toy, which hopefully can remain my irons pistol.

I shot some 25 yard practice with my Ruger today and it was CRAP. Called it short rather than waste ammo. I did have way too much coffee in me to even mess with shooting a decent score, but that didn't ease the pain much. But that's also an example of how much 25 yards shows flaws. Anything you do wrong is much easier to see on the target when you pull it back
That's funny because I just started thinking about getting another MKIV and putting some good iron sights on it to see what I could do.

Don't worry about the wobbling dot. It's annoying but it's also a great help to be able to see a reliable sight picture. Sometimes the Universe is kind and the wibbles compensate for the wobbles and you find something in the X ring.

My eyes don't allow the crisp, clear view of the sights that I had when I was a young man of 60....... .........so the dot gives me a chance.

I just have to be patient, control the wobble as best I can and squeeze. Can't try to force it. Being totally focused, achieving intense concentration and being totally relaxed at the same time is a thing that can be achieved.......once in a while.

Sometimes I have to just set the gun down and relax, do a few stretches and come back to it. Muscle tension and anxiety can be overcome that way. Getting old is not fun, but you gotta keep fighting it.

Be sure to get a sight where you can successfully adjust the intensity of the dot to your personal taste. Otherwise it can look big and fuzzy and cover up too much. My eyes need a tiny little dot that is just barely visible.

I don't care if you young guys are beating me........after all, it's to be expected.

I do think, however, (somewhere back in this thread) that there's a guy named Gwelo or something like that......and he has fancy guns and amazing scores........AND HE'S OLDER THAN ME!!!

So I have to look to my goals and get better.

I mentioned above that I just started thinking about getting another MKIV and putting some good iron sights on it to see what I could do.

Well, I noticed that VQ has MKIV Target uppers on sale for $40 and they're throwing in a nice Ruger carry case.

Got one on the way to my gunsmith now. Guess the serial number is on the upper, so it has to go to an FFL.
