My father bought this old trapdoor at a pawn shop back aroud 1950 for $7.00, bayonette included, and its been moved around for years,.
I fianlly got around to cleaning it up and fixing a few problems, like a broken rear sight and missing cleaning rod. I found a guy at the wanamakers show in tulsa, ok, that specialises in the old trapdoors and has a lot of parts.
I have been using the rifle for our club US military issue rifle matches for a while, when I first started shooting it, it keyholed badly and shot about a foot and a half high at 100 yards.
Lee makes a 405 grain 45/70 bullet mold with a hollow base, that corrected the keyholing rather spectacular keyholing when you hit the target stand, pine all over the place.
I also made up a 1/8 inch higher front sight that got it on target at 100 yards.
Last fathers day, I took it out to my sons place, he has a backstop made of railroad ties, and shot it at a few things. An old toilet made a good target, and disintegrated nicely, a real plumbers dream. Sometimes you just get tired of shooting holes in paper.

just ran the load over the chrony this weekend, looks like around 1250 fps for a 405 gr bullet with our not quite compressed pyrodex load. prababoly could do better, but why stress a rifle 60 years older than me?

Nothing like a Trapdoor for fun, mines a H&R carbine but would love a seven dollar original like yours, if only we knew back then.

Those H&R Trapdoors are real nice, American rifles.
I think that they look fantastic with the deep bluing and case coloring.
