Here are a before and after of my benchrest 40X I just picked up. It was built by Butch Hongisto and then later had the chamber cleaned up a little by Gene Davis. It had several layers of paint on it when I got it... and the last coat was in black and wasn't pretty. I stripped it down and decided to just go with a clear coat finish. I am pretty satisfied with the results for now.

I use to shoot every Tuesday with Gene, and I was up to see him this past Tuesday to pick-up a 40x. He is still building them and turning out even better rifles. Him and Ray have matches at the club during the summer. I guess from what Gene said that his grandson is shooting with him. I know in the past that his wife was ill alot and he isn't a spring chicken any more. He is a work of art just in himself.

Remington 40X Rimfire, single shot, Shilen 20" barrel, 2 oz trigger, MacMillan Stock, Ser. # 0565XXR
From the original 24" barrel the manufacture code would suggest July 1978.
B X L 4200 36X AO scope

Checked the trigger, cleaned it with lighter fluid and air, and it now breaks clean but at about 6 oz.
A previous owner did not like the Remington bolt and replaced it with a bigger knob.
The groups in the .20 - .25" range were very encouraging.

Got a XR stock of of ebay. It was in good shape but the finish was scratched and poped off in places. So I have refinished the stock, pillar bedded the action and she is back together. I still have the original stock so I can go either way but I love the handgrip and surface to rest your thumb. Going to take her to the benchrest match in October to see how she does as vintage against those high dollar rigs.

I think she turned out very nice

Just picked this up yesterday.

It was already mounted in the HS Precision stock...

Now all it needs is some threads on the barrel and a nice scope.....

These are not original.

My USMC in a stock I messed with:

Haven't shot it much. Wasn't that great, but is better now after Gene Davis did some work to the chamber.

My HB in a stock from Numrich that I redid:

This has always shot great. Last target with peeps:

40-XB Repeater Sporter Collection

www.picturetrail.com/40XBSporter

Here are several photos of my three 40-XB Repeater Sporters, as well as the story on my new F-Grade Sporter, in two separate photo albums. I am the original owner of all three rifles. The "original" two were built in 1975 and 1977 respectively, and the new F-grade would be classified as a 1979/2013 Model. Without a doubt the finest bolt action .22 LR Rifles to be produced by an American Gunmaker, and the Oldest to boot!

On top is big brother in .260 Rem. The 40X just got a Lilja and is shooting between 1/4 and 1/2 MOA with Eley Edge and Match.
