42MB unusual front sight

Log in to see fewer ads
A unusual front modification reported in the NMCA Spring Newsletter.
There were 2 sights shown in the NMCA newsletter on 42MB rifles.
I have the same sight on a 42 MB Lend Lease rifle with British Proof marks.
Mossbergnut is reporting he has the same type of sight.

Sight is on a parts Mossberg 42M-B rifle I bought. No US Property stamping or serial number.
There is a 3355 Serial number hand stamped on the left side of the receiver.
There's a Flaming Bomb stamp on top of the reciever.
Rifle has be highly polished and re-blued. Stock is cut down in the forearm area with no check piece and a trapdoor buttplate.

Can you please post more pictures of this rifle? Particularly the glaming bomb... this is a semi-new discovery on these rifles with only a few reported.

42MB(a)

ser#31128 not sure of the wood,"UNITED STATES PROPERTY", looks to me like British proofs, don't think front sight hood is original, no rear sight, scope blocks with unknown scope, no dust shield, butt trap door, mag is missing bottom plate and spring is soldered in, has R/G pins, rear sling swivel is there but not front, threaded barrel, rear scope mount has been butchered away for the bolt, scope is missing elevation cap. Picked up last fall at a gun show here on Vancouver Island. Talked the fellow down as not original but still an example to fit in my collection. Not posting pictures (atleast yet) as my my good computer is down and this one needs to be converted to a boat anchor. - Bill

Back from a local (1Hr away) gun show. Purchased a bolt with dust shield. Found out the dust shield is missing because it won't work with the butchered scope mounts. Anyone know a proper scope mount for this model? Also purchsed another mag for it. Upon further checking the mag that came with it did have a bottom plate but pushed up 1/8 inch into mag an a spring soldered in to operate the mag retaining arm. I checked my collection and I also have M42 nontrainer but again it looks like someone "cleaned" it up. - Bill

42M-B picked up at gun show today

Well I couldn't resist. I was at the gun show and it was like a sad puppy that needed a good home. Rear target sight was missing, front hood, bolt cover screw, butt plate screw, butt trap door spring were also missing. The stock was cut down and the"United States Property" had been filed on with the serial number completely filed off! There is 1 mark just back of the barrel that looks like an "O" with an "S" coming out of the top.

Also picked up a 151M-B in better shape but no markings.

I've never really like the looks of these full stocked Mossberg trainers, but this one I recently picked up has changed my perspective. Surprised by how light this rifle is.
