Just a FYI. According to Thomas D. Bathas' book " U.S. Martial .22 RF Rifles", Excalibur Publications, Copyright 2000, on page 56 he states, "A large quantity of these rifles (Mossberg 44US / my addition) were reportedly rebuilt for the civilian marksmanship program in 1986. The rebuild program consisted primarily of gauging, replacing of defective parts and cosmetic refinishing to include parkerizing metal surfaces, and sanding and staining the stock."

That's exactly correct. They were rebuilt at either RRAD or Savannah AD, Illinois for the CPM. I'm still trying to track down the depot that did the work. Regards, Rick.

149195 Beech, S-122 front, S-100 rcvr, CMP, Blued, U.S. PROPERTY marked on barrel and reciever
140606 Beech, S-122 front, S-100 rcvr, CMP, Blued, 44 U.S. (a), D&T, U.S. PROPERTY marked on barrel and receiver, barrel markings like the other (a) models have been described.

It was my understanding that the (a) models were delineated as such because they were drilled and tapped (being a model variant)?

Mine is stamped with company name on barrel along with 44 U.S. 22 LR and U.S. PROPERTY - receiver is stamped U.S. PROPERTY SER NO 162313. - barrel and receiver are parkerized and rifle has the Lyman 57MS rear. Comb on the stock is stamped RR 152 (rifle rack number). Stock appears to be birch.

I don't understand. First, how did you buy it from the US Navy? If it was the property of the US Navy, then it was issued to them. Please elaborate as this sounds like an interesting story. Regards, Rick.

Just recived this one yesterday !!!!!!!!

I finely got my U.S.44 ............I'am one happy camper !
Found this on a local forum out here in Cal
The Bore is Perfect !!
Got it for $ 280 ...Shipped !!! Serial # 146449

Now here's the thing I need to ask you guys ...

Would it be worth it to re-finish the stock ( I've done a few before )
Or leave it alone and let it show it's age
My Grandpa had one of these Years ....... Ago
And as you can see the stock on this one is just O K
I want a Darker finish like my Grandpa's had

I finally dug my two US Property 44s out.

44US(a) US Property marked on barrel and Rec, 142277 S122 front, Lyman 57 rear (and beech stock is only cut out for this Lyman rear sight) Stock is marked with large Ordnance wheel. Rec. is drilled and tapped for scope. Rifle is blued. Safety buttons replaced with painted metal buttons (and an "S" stamped in the wood by the "safe" button)
