I got a Savage 4C with the #7 stamped on top of the barrel right where it goes into the Receiver!

I have a Savage Model 7 with a 7 in the same area. My Grandfather bought it new in 1938. I have a feeling that is an inspectors mark, not a serial number. Back in the day, inexpensive .22's were not serialized.

I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of when my 87B was manufactured. My dad just passed this on to me, and says he thinks he bought it when he was 12, in the early 1960s. I've gotten a vintage Weaver 3/4 scope and vintage Weaver N2 mount for it. I had to source a firing pin for it, and I'm still trying to sort that out to get it to fire. I also had to replace the bolt handle (the old one had a bad detent).

Make/Model: Stevens Model 87BN
Factory: Chicopee Falls, Mass.
Date Code: 2
Barrel: 2094577 Patent 2224758 2223093 RE22585 2271576 (upside down looking)
Receiver & Sights: Standard front & rear sights (receiver drill & tapped for "Lyman style" deluxe peep sight)
Stock: has very plain appearing stock - was refinished by my father at some point
Magazine Tube: has bullet shaped cut out in tube
Trigger Guard: Formed flat steel
Gills: 8 left 1 right

In my above post, I believe I incorrectly identified the "date code" as 2. After giving the rifle a 10 minute bath in a sonic cleaner, a very tiny "23C" in a faint circle was revealed. I believe this means it was manufactured in 1951?

Just registered and first post. Lots of good info on here.
I just picked up a Springfield 87A in pretty good shape.
Pawn shop find while picking up a Marlin 336cs I saw it and a Remington Speedmaster 552 couldn't help myself for a C note.
When I get a chance I will add the rifle specifics.
Just from the thread I think mine is 1946-48 ish. Chicopee plant.

WTB WTB Savage Model 3,3A,3B,

Found this while looking at the trading post, responded improperly so I'll try again here.I like pretty things.Wood on guns is one.I bought this Savage #3 years ago and would sell it but would really like to know more about it.The wood is the nicest that I've ever seen on an inexpensive rifle. The rest of the piece looks real nice as well. The only printing on the barrel besides 22.short etc is Savage Arms Corporation Utica N.Y. Made in U.S.A. and a circle with 14 inside .The barrel is 24 inches and measures close to 41 7/8 inches.Has plain front sight and back and it hasn't been drilled for another sight or scope.

Wopper Don't know if the photo posted or not.

I recently purchased this Stevens model 87A and it would appear that it just came out of the shipping box, there is no indication of wear anywhere on it. The blueing is perfect with no wear and the hardwood stock is in perfect shape with no dings and unless someone did a fantastic job of cleaning, it doesn't even appear to have been shot.

Stevens - Savage Arms Corp.
Chicopee Falls, Mass USA
Model 87A
No date code, just a heart shape
with a zero next to it.
Patents - The 5 common Pats.
24" barrel
.22 short, long or long rifle
long rifle only as automatic
Sights - Leaf Adj., Gold bead
No drilled holes for sights
Gills - 8 on left , one on right
Charging handle - large knurled
Trigger guard - cast metal, receased
Mag tube - Cartridge shaped
Bumper - Spring loaded
Stock - Plain hardwood
Trigger Mech - Short
Cartridge lifter - Wire
