Yup, best saying I ever heard to cover this situation- "if you lend a guy $20 and you never see him again, it was probably money well spent"....

Hope you kept at least one 40X/XB?

So far, turned it down, polished it, cut it off at 24" and cut a 11 degree target crown. Then I took it upstairs and cleaned the bore. Seemed like it had a ton of stuff in the bore so I kept at it and used a bit of Rem oil on a wrapped brass brush to knock some of the stuff loose. After about 30 patches, it is now clean as a whistle and looks like it should.

Now to install the trigger, bolt, etc... and get started on the wood...

If you are looking for bottom metal, the 700 ADL trigger guard is available in steel from aftermarket suppliers. The factory aluminum doesn't look bad either. I think they look nice on the 700/40X single shots.

I have to check the action screw spacing on my 40X. I haven't determined yet if the 40X and 40XB have the same spacing in order to use the 700 short action parts since the 40X is built on a 722 action... also, since I am thinking of building this into a repeater, the solid bottom metal of the 722 has the advantage of not hinging so I can lay it out and cut out a magazine window if I need to and add a release without having to deal with the hinge hardware..

BobSc;
The action screw spacing is 6.5 inches on both. Both .900 from the back of the recoil lug. Wayne

Finally rounded up all the parts and pieces and have the stock about 95% done. Inletted the ADL trigger guard this morning- I looked at a bunch of pictures in the 40X gallery thread and found that almost all of the original repeater 40X rifles used ADL type bottom hardware and used a small plate for the magazine trim piece and release. So, I thought I would give that a try and see how I like it. Worse that can happen is I can buy some BDL type bottom metal and inlet it over the existing inletting and it should drop right in like I never did any other way.

A little nervous about making the first cuts on this action because there is no going back, but it looks like I just need to make a cut to fit the magazine only and everything else fits outside the action. I've decided to use the Marlin 25N mags and mag slide and a slight variation on Hellbenders' conversion, which several other people have accomplished also (and sent me pictures), so almost time to dive in.... Any last minute hints would be appreciated....
